New owner of an older Colt AR-15 SP1.  Just getting into how to disassemble, clean, etc., etc.  Anyone have any ideas on removal of the (really tight) hand guard slip ring?  "Pulling down the slip ring" seems a lot easier said than done on this rifle.  Thanks.

They make a tool for that but generally the buddy system works fine.  I've never seen one that was too tight for me by myself.  Stand the rifle up on a table so the barrel is pointing straight up and push down on the delta ring...if it still won't move, find a friend.

BTW - welcome to the madness that is AR15.com

Thanks.  Will this tool work for an A1 set of guards?

Do you have the straight sided Slip ring, or the tapered type Delta ring?

The tool will work for either one you just need to squeeze it more on the straight sided ones to keep it from slipping off.

I have used the rubber coated handles of channel lock pliers to get a good grip and then pull down on the ring.  Don't use the jaws on the ring but slip the handles over like a nut cracker.
