My first AR was(still hav it) A Bushy shorty in A2 set-up. If I would have known then what I know now, I would have gotten it in a flet-top configuration. Since then, I have bought all my newer AR's in A3 set-up, but I am still hesitant to trade my old Bushy off.

What's your opinion on A2 set-ups?  Are they obsolete?

I wouldnt call it obsolete, but an A3 with carry handle can do the same thing.  I really regret buying my A1 knowing I would want an optic in the future.  Every chance I get I tell people to go A3 rather than A1/A2.

I am dying (not literally) to get a Colt SP1. That is one A1 configuration I would love to have.

To answer the original post, I would say the A2 is still a viable platform. Obviously, you are limited in optic applications somewhat. However, there are adapters that let you use M68CCO's, ACOG TA01's and EOTECH's so, it is still pretty versatile.

Obsolete as in "there are better options"? Probably. Obsolete as in "Useless POS"? Definitely NOT.

A2 Carbine, RAS with a EOTech mounted on top = KICKASS

Disclaimer, YMMV, IMHO, so on and so forth.

My 3rd AR was an A2.  Sure they are not as versatile as an A3/A4 but I just wanted one so I picked up a Bushmaster 20" A2 HBAR off the EE.  I don't think they are obsolete, they just don't fit some uses.

Obsolete? No. It all depends on the wants and needs of the individual.

A3 flat tops are nice due to the versatility for optics mounting. A3 flat tops also carry a sort of "cool factor" here with some folks. Just look at some of the threads from new members who just purchased their first AR.

How many times have you read: "I just came home with my new Bushmaster, it's my first AR. What kind of cool accessories can I buy for it?"

In those cases I always recommend learning to shoot with irons first. Master irons first, then start looking at optics. Don't buy accessories for your rifle based off what others have on their rifles, but based off your wants and needs.

Me personally, I've outfitted rifles with the latest optics. You know what my "go-to" rifle is..........

God I love that carbine Quib!!!!!!!  How much does that thing weigh?

The A2 is alive and well.  Just take a look at PirateEC's carbines and you'll be like "oh, now that's sweet"

Ya know, I honestly don't remember. I weighed it once shortly after I built it. If I remember correctly it was in the 6.5-7.0# ballpark.

My sons carbine is probably a bit lighter yet still with his Colt upper receiver (No FA). Here he's pictured training with his "irons", and he's getting to be a pretty good marksman. Impresses my buddies at group shoots.

Makes me a proud Papa Quib!

(Ignore his hippy hair, it's now currently with-in regs.)

These days, you don't have to get a SP1 to have that look. With NoDak Spud's slabside lower you'll get the exact same look with a more versatile lower (small pin). I absolutely love mine.

Quib, that looks exactly like my Bushy carbine. Only difference is, I put one of those rails that screw through the vent-hole in my handguard, then mounted a forward vertical grip. It's lightwieght though.

I wouldn't mind having a rifle like that...but with money as a constraint i have to pick and chose what I buy so I'm going with flat tops and carry handles for versatilitys sake.

Oh and if you call that hippie hair...lol you should see mine.  I grow mine out every year to donate to a cancer patient to have a wig made (could make $150 to $200 if I sold it to a wig shop).  Right now it's probably around 10 inches
