I have a cast lower that has one of the forward pushpin holes snapped off. Is there any fix to this?

Not really.

a new lower is less money than a very specialized welder's repair charge, which may not work anyway

Sorry

Who makes the lower? "Some" companies will replace it with a forged one.

I wouldnt invest any time repairing that. If the company dosent / cant replace it with a newer forged one,well..it's only $100

+1, lets hear who made it before giving anymore advice....

don't jump the gun with "buy a new one" if he can get one for free.

Just be thankful it wasn't an SBR, or worse, an M16 RR.

There are smiths out there who can weld on your old one or fab a new one and weld it on.  However the cost to do this would far exceed the cost to replace the lower itself.

As others have said, unless the manufacturer will replace the entire lower for you, you are better off buying a new one.

Use the colt type double screw pivot pin and a thin washer.

If they replace it, and I think they will, be prepared to tell them which FFL you will have it shipped to. They wont be able to send it to you directly.

Last year I bought two M1A bare receivers from Fulton Armory. They were shipped to my local FFL dealer after I had an original signatured copy of their FFL sent to Fulton. The receivers came in, I had to go through all the acrobatics to include the "Instant Background Check", and then went home with the receivers. Upon inspection, I found that they were unacceptable due to casting voids and flashing. I contacted Fulton Armory and bitched. They said to ship back the defective receivers which I did. THEN, they shipped the two replacements directly TO MY HOUSE. Since I live in Liberal New Jersey, I felt paranoia set in and I took both to my FFL dealer who gladly (for a fee again) ran the new ones through all the paperwork again. I have since questioned if I wasted money for the second "blessing of the receiveers" and if I should have just shut up.

OST, I also have a DPMS cast lower, and am interested in seeing what they will do for you...

i would think if the receiver has a new serial # they would have to go through an FFL. But I'm not certain.

If they have the same Serial number, and you've already done the paperwork, then they can ship directly to you.

If new numbers, then they must go to an FFL.

I'm thinking its more the returning to manufacturer for repair.  Any FFL out there care to dime in?

It's fine for him to ship to the manufacturer, but if the manufacturer sends him a different sn# he'll have to go and 4473 it again at an FFL.

If they mark the new lower with the same SN# as the original lower, then they can ship it back to him direct.

Well, I called DPMS today. They will not repair or replace. I cannot even purchase a new one with the same serial number. I was told a new stripped lower would run around $189.00 . He did suggest that I might be able to get by with JB weld or a similar product.

Thats unfortunate. A customer of ours broke his cast lower (he did not buy the rifle from us), and they replaced his cast lower with a new forged one. As I recall, all the customer paid for was the shipping and background check. I think he got his gun just as they discontinued the cast lowers, so his was not that old. How old is your lower?

I just dug out my cancelled check. I bought it new 01/30/2004. The CSR told me that they stopped making cast lowers 6-7 years ago. I didn't think it was that long ago.

I'd be interested in purchasing it.  I'm currently taking a welding class and I'm primarily interested in firearms repair.  I put an ad in the EE a few weeks ago looking for broken uppers and lowers.
Send me an IM.
