How can an 18" midlength SPR barrel have the same sight radius as a 20" barrel?  Does it use the same length gas tube as a a rifle length system, but just a shorter barrel?  I don't quite understand it.  Can anybody shed some light on the subject?  Thanks.  MJD

Well, you have a few options with a midlength.

You could have a 12" or 13.5" free float tube, with sights on the rail.

You could have a FSB mounted in front of a full length tube, just with no gas tube in it.

I measured the length of my gas tube and it reads 15" from the pin to the end of the tube.  Is that longer than a rifle length/same/shorter?
The reason I was asking this question was to choose the proper length float tube for my build.  I want to cover the low profile gas block.

*edit* I was going to use a low profile gas block, but I've changed my mind.  I now intend to use the windage adjustable front sight base that came with the barrel.  My barrel has flats machined into the sides and bottom to accomodate the FSB.  Plus, it'll save me well over $100 by not using a front flip up and gas block.  MJD

*edit 2*- Here's a picture of the barrel with tape measure for comparison.  It's (supposed to be) a midlength 18" White Oak SPR barrel, but it's got 12" of space between the receiver and the FSB.  Isn't a midlength only 10"?  I'm wondering if I have an SPR-R barrel.  MJD

if its a rifle gas system it is a sprr. white oak spr is mid gas system. on the 18" sprr the gas block will be exposed with a standard rifle free float (12"). a spr mid would use a 9" rail to expose the gas block and a 10" rail to cover it.

Well, looks like I have an SPRR then.  There is clearly 12" between the FSB and the receiver.  I suppose I could get a 13.2" rail and low profile gas block, but that seems a bit silly.  If I can't fit everything in 12" of space, shame on me.  MJD
