| I'm going to convert my standard upper to a flat-top by the most affordable way possible. Is there anything I should look for or stay away from when buying a stripped upper? Are the Stripped Mil Spec uppers ok or should I go with a Bushmaster? I have an M4 so I need one with the feed ramps right? Any info would be greatly appreciated...Thanks! |
If your barrel doesn't have a M4 extended feedramps extension it is bad to use a M4 upper receiver with ramp extension, the bullet tip have the possibility of getting stuck on the upper receiver ramp extension and the lower edge of the barrel extension and could jam. Take a look at the possible combinations of standard feedramps, M4 feedramps, and uppers with and without feedramps extensions in this thread, look at the bottom pictures. | Apparently I have the standard upper with standard feedramps...no M4 anything, except for the barrel itself. Sooooooo...what exactly does this mean? Is it worth it to spend the time and money to buy an M4 upper and barrel extension? Does it make the weapon operate any more efficiently or is it not that huge of a deal? Thanks a lot! |

The barrel extension have the M4 feedramps, it comes that way when the barrel assembly is made, it's hard for us users or even the gunsmith to change barrel extensions, it's easier and better to just get a different barrel assembly with the desired type of feedramps. As long as you don't mix the standard feedramp barrel extension with a M4 upper receiver with extended feedramps all the other combinations should work fine. It is my own opinion only that if I have a choice of feedramps with a carbine, I would choose both the M4 feedramped extension and upper receiver because the carbine action is not as reliable as a 20" rifle gas system and it would help in the reliability of the carbine. All current Colt carbine production models have M4 type feedramps extension and uppers, their rifles don't have the M4 feedramps because rifles don't need it. |
| So why exactly would they assemble an M4 upper without the feed ramps? This is sort of depressing...I just got on this forum about 2 weeks ago and already I've found out I have a "cheaply assembled" weapon without many "options"...now I have to figure out if I should build a new one or rebuild mine? I'm sure I am making a bigger deal out of this than it is though. Thanks guys! |
