I am wondering what everyones opinion is on quad rail systems.  I am not trying to break the bank, but would like a decent rail set up.  Looking at YHM, MI and surefire.  Would like some feedback, and any advantage to free floating systems.  This is a SRT patrol rifle so not going to be doing any long shooting.  My FN is for that.  The system will be going on a RRA entry tactical.  Thanks in advance guys.  TEXPO

Welcome to the board.

I use rails (FF) on all my builds. M.I. makes a great product, So does Troy. There are many out there that would suit your needs.

For LE work I'd recommend a rail with at least a 65 lumen light. I use a 9V 160 lumen set up myself.

M4 you might be able to tell me then.  Mi says it installs over orginal barrel nut.  Do I still have to remove the barrel, an delta ring, how does it acomplish this?

You can remove the Delta ring with a dremmel by cutting, or take of the barrel. I remove the barrel, that way there's no chance of a slip of the hand causing damage to other parts. Since I install all my barrels to the receivers, this has been an easy decision for me. Making your own upper is very easy, and much cheaper than a complete purchase.

OK that helps...one other question..I have the dominator mount on my RRA will that interfear with the MI rail system.?

No, it won't cause any problems. The MI rail will match up exactly to you receiver rail. Giving it a monolithic look.

The dominator mount will not extend beyond the front of the receiver.

I strongly suggest you go with a Troy rail.  It's a 2 piece, free float design, that bolts up to be VERY solid.  It would work fine with your dominator mount.

I walked a buddy though his first install.  Took him about 15 minutes total.

edit: Forgot to add....with the 2 pc unit, you just push in the detent on the bottom, and the lower 1/2 slides off, so you can clean under your rail system.  very handy and can be done in the field if needed.

That was my other question about the roatation problem with freefloats.  Does the MI have that problem?

The M.I. rail locks into the barrel nut itself. Solid as a rock. I'm not at home right now to check, but I think it also has tabs on the upper section that engage the upper receiver.

I've handled both, and they both seem solid, and did not rotate.  I just thought the quality and looks of the troy was better.  Both use the barrel not as an attachment point, so that would eliminate the twist.

I don't care for the larger circles between the rails on the MI.  Plus, the MI has more screws to come loose wit recoil, and the Troy has the detent to lock and unlock the bottow section without tools.  They are both made in the USA, which is a plus.

Here is a Guide to the MI FF rail installation process, it may be of some help to you, there are a bunch of pictures as well.

SO Stick, I am assuming you like the MI rail system.  I like the freefloat idea, and the MI doens't seem to be the most exspensive out there.  I like the troy as well, but again looking to try and keep spending to a minimum.  thanks again..

I think the MI offers a lot of bang for the buck.  I've got several guys on my department that are using them on their duty weapons, and they are quite satisfied with them.

I use the MI #20 on my Patrol rifle. It's never loosened. The rail lines up perfectly with my /Bushmaster flat top. Only thing I don't like about the MI is it 's wide. I use a vert grip so it doesn't matter. I run a TLR2 on mine. It gives me the light I need plus a laser and it's very light weight and LED.

Well,
the least expensive free floating rail system out there is the YHM and comes with anti rotation pins than screw into the barrel mount. I use these on all my builds with Noveske barrels and Vltor receivers (MUR1A). Lets face it if you don't mine not having the rail numbered, YHM is the way to go. All rail systems are made by CNC and the alum is the same. YHM about half the cost. FYI - when building a suppressed SBR weapon, Only YHM rails allows the suppressor to drop inside of the rail system. The others have to small of a diameter. Both uppers are 16" even with a suppressor attached.
