i was talking to an older man the other day mentioning to him that i was going to buy an ar upper with a chrome-moly chrome lined barrel and he prceeded to tell me that that was'nt a wise thing to do. so hivemind refresh my memory why a chrome lined barrel is a good thing vs just a chrome-moly barrel |

On an almost microscopic level, as I understand it, chrome plating cannot ever be 100% even. I assume this means the thickness of the chroming is inconsistent (to a ten-thousandth of an inch or something) and makes a barrel theoretically less accurate. I print ok groups with my skinny chrome lined barrel though. I see no reason NOT to go chrome. If you want extreme accuracy, I'd be inclined to get a stainless barrel. Why do they still even sell unlined chrome-moly barrels anymore? |
That's a very good point. If you have such accuracy needs that a chrome-lined barrel doesn't do it for you, you ought to be looking at a stainless barrel anyway. |

In general, CL'd barrels are not quite as accurate, when talking about precision level shooting. However, they can be. I think I got lucky with one of mine--a Bushy V Match 20 inch has turned out to be one of my most accurate--consistent 5 shot .75 MOA groups. I have to use just the right ammo though--my V Match shoots a wider variation with different ammo, as compared to my varmint or match set ups, which are more consistent. |
