So I just got an A1 upper an I have to say that it's pretty darn awesome!  It's so fricking lightweight.  I put it on a lower with an A2 stock and a MIAD grip.  After that I swapped out the Triangular hand guards for some A2 rifle hand guards I had lying around.  It felt even better!  Part of me wants to swap out the A1 sight aperture for an A2 with it's larger aperture.

So, is it sacrilege of me to swap stuff out on this retro upper?

Depends on what YOU like.  I don't build my rifles to satisfy anybody else but ME.  My "retro" rifle has a true Colt M16A1 upper, but on a run of the mill DPMS lower.  The upper is grey and the lower is black.  The charging handle is black.  Do I care? No.  I built it for feel, not exactness.  It is a good shooter and feels like an old A1, just doesn't look like one down to the T.  It is your $$$ and you should build your rifle to suit you.  Just my thoughts.

I would say it would be a better choice to use an repro A1 upper, with a lightweight profile 1/7 barrel with round handguards.

A lot of us using "retro" A1 uppers are running A2 sight apertures. It just works better for many of us.

Heh. Really, I don't care if people don't like me de-retro-ing an upper.  I just wanted an opportunity to talk about my new "build".

So, it should be pretty easy to change out an A1 aperture to an A2?  I was thinking about pulling the A2 off of a carry handle I am currently not using.

Also, is there a company that produces a stripped lower that matches the old colt gray?

Ok, let me start by saying that I'm a huge retro fan. Does it bother me that you are de-retroing an old upper? Hell no. You've put together a gun that you like and that's what counts. I've got an A1 barrel on a flat top upper with a cheap scope and A2 handguards as my dedicated 22LR upper. It's not "correct" retro A1 or "correct" A2 or "correct" anything but, it's light to carry around, it shoots 22LR out of it's 1:12 barrel respectfully, it's cheap to shoot, and it's FUN. Isn't that what we all here for?

I have had a A1ish bushmaster rifle thats not a retro build, when it was built they didn't make all the cool gadgets we have today. I will always take a 20" 1/12 55 grainer over any other ratio any day of the week. Upgrades are great also. I put an A2 grip and the easy to use delta ring. Of course, case deflector and F/A. I use the A2 stock, I was a wuss and just couldn't acclimate  myself to my nose touching the charging handle. I stayed with the A1 rear sight and the square post on the front.
