I have this colt a2 rec. and the finish is flaking off of it, dont really know what to do normally i would quit bitching throw a barrel on and shoot the shit out of it but its colt and i kinda want to keep it lookin preeeety. If its to much trouble i might just sell it and start surfing the EE. Its been recoated cause it looks like regular phosphate under whats flaking off, is there anything that will take it off without damaging the phosphate.

I've seen it on everything from Colt to Stag and everyone in between. I dont know enough to know why it happens though.

Something got screwed up when it was anodized. Anodizing in simple terms , increases the natural oxidizing layer of the bare aluminum. In this case, something in the cleaning prep or acid baths in the anodize process got screwed up. As pictured, a chunk of the layer has flaked and I doubt it will be able to be reanodized and keep a uniform appearance..

I have seen this in the aviation sector with 9 out of 10 times the part is scrapped. In this case though, I would see no degradation of actual performance or safety of the piece as is.

You could always sell it as is or just continue to use it.

They are factory anodized, not parkerized.  The coating that is comming off is very thick, thicker then a conversion coating like anodizing, it is something else, like paint.  Shoot some carb or brake cleaner on it and see if it comes off.  Beware, it may be a really ugly part under the paint.

Why am I betting that this upper is a milsurp piece, that was recoatied in an Army  Ordnance shop?  Well, anyway, whether milsurp recoat, or some hammyhocked civie job, what's on there did NOT happen at the Colt factory.

Looks very much like the M16A1 upper I picked up several years back. When I cleaned the overcoat off of it, it had 99.99% of the original anodizing on it, and looked just about new.  Still does

Agreed. Whatever is falling off that receiver wasn't put there by Colt.

i got it stripped off it took 1 1/2 cans of non chlorinated brake cleaner and about 2 days to get it to original anodize. Anodizing took a little beating in the process but i think its gtg for awile. found another proof mark in the process im not at home so i cant look at it closly but its a triangle with a weird shap in the middle. I will post picks shortly.  As to whether or not its original colt coating idunno ive heard ekie i think mention something about colt using a type of black paint to "Fix" problem areas, and the barrel and this upper had it on it, but any bubba with a brush could do that. I just rest easier knowing that that shit is off of there.

I doubt the brake cleaner hurt the anodizing, I have yet to hurt anodizing with the stuff.

That would be VP in triangle, stands for Verified Proof.

USGI rebuilds typically are painted black, or coated with a gray SFL.

Colt does use gray paint for touch up, but not on an entire upper.  Things like the front swivel rivet, castle nut, bolt catch roll pin, stuff like that can get touch up paint.
