What is involved in the install of a free float handguard?h.gif

Depends on the brand/style you purchase:

For some, you just have to cut of the delta ring (this is the easy way, compared to the method below for removing it) and then the handguard clamps to the outside of the barrel nut.  (Troy, Samson, some MI)

For most, you have to remove the front sight base, change the barrel nut and torque it, install the rail, then reinstall the front sight base.  (LaRue, DD, YHM...)

The latter requires proper tools and a sturdy bench vise.

It's easy unless youv'e got a damn Colt barrel. They put those taper pins in to never come out. I've had to cut off more than 1 FSB on a Colt. My advice is to buy the FSB holder from Bronnells before you start. It's worth every penny.

Colt are EASY to remove compared to some Bushmaster and most Stag pins.

Do Stag barrels have the same non-taper pins that some of the older Rock River barrels had?  I had a RRA DCM upper that had slightly oversized straight pins.  Weird I know.

It's not that tough to install a float tube if you have proper tools and knowledge.  My YHM went on really easy and has never come loose even though it just threads on.  It doesn't hurt to keep bigger hammer on hand just in case.    MJD

Stag uses taper pins.
They install them backwards of everyone else.

They press them in REALLY tight.
I had to make a special press fixture to remove them.
