WHats the consensus on theses? Are they sturdy or crap?

they are sturdy and lock in tight; best quality made HGs for the price imo

the only problems i have heard w/ YHMs are that thier rails were not spec w/ a few attachments (such as the TG VFGs)

I have a YHM free float carbine tube.  It's sturdy, locks up tight, and has in spec rails.  I've never stuck a Tango Down VFG on it, but everything else I've hung on it fits (ladder and panel style covers, GripPod, QD sling point). Mine is the older style w/o the anti-rotation screws, and it hasn't moved.  Personally, I'd go with MI rails.  They have all the advantages of the YHMs, and are better finished, for only a few dollars more.

I have both the old with out the anti rotation screws and the new with them. I like them, I have never had a problem with them.

I wont be jumping outta helos, but want something I could stake my life on if the SHTF. Im building up a carbine with a 16" barrel and an ACOG so I can reach a bit out there, kinda like whats called a 'recon' or 'Recce'

The only disadvantages: Being labled a cheapskate & they've got a hefty diameter.

Good! Thanks for the clarification! Here's my deal - I'm going to shoot 3-gun matches and probably some other fun stuff. I'm a little rough and tumble.( Other folks might call me clumsy.) There is a good chance that I might bang the side of the hand guard on a post, or come down hard on a window ledge. I may also drop a little fast on a bipod.

A dented or bent rail is going to be pretty worthless to me. What's going to stand up to hard competitive use?
