Is it true that H buffers were designed for burst lowers whereas H2 buffers were designed for full auto lowers?  I will need one or the other for a short barrelled full auto.

You need the standard H buffer.

OK.  But no one seems to know what H2 buffers are for.

H = carbine/M4

H2 = M4A1

H3 = Commando

Finally!!!  Thanks you!  If I plan on alternating b/w a 10.5 inch upper and a 14.5 inch upper (on full auto lower), will the H2 be OK?

It should do just fine.

But only you can be the judge of that.

Small Arms Review said that the H buffer was for regular M4s and that H2 buffers were for the heavier barreled M4s.  It cautioned against using H2 buffers in regular profile M4s, which could present problems in cold temperatures.

I dont have a 10.5 but do have 2 14.5 LMT M4s

They both run on any buffer

standard to 9mm

I cant tell any difference Between my H buffer and my Standard

But the Heavy 9mm buffer I can alot

I talked to a tech at Colt and I couldn't believe what he told me.  When I asked him which buffer he recommended for my M16, he said he never even heard of a H buffer, much less a H2 or H3!  He said Colt uses only 1 buffer in all their carbines, regardless of barrel length and fire mode (semi/auto).  And of course, he reprimanded me for frankensteining my M16 by putting a *gasp* Bushmaster upper on it!    Interesting.......

I run H and H2 buffers in my carbines.

Me too.  Why would a barrel profile affect the cycling of the action given the same size gas port??

I believe the author of that article (who also wrote Black Rifle II) commented here on this issue, under the user name "crsbar".

I use a H1 in my 14.5 and a H2 in my 10.5.

That is in reference to the full auto vs burst capability which makes sense.  Changing buffer weights due to barrel profile does not make sense.

is it a H buffer or marked H1

I thought it went like

Standard carbine

H2 buffer
H3 buffer (cost alot)
9mm buffer  (25 bucks)

I'll apologize to Randal from AR15barrels.com and use his picture that illustrates the buffers some.

There is no EXACT LIST of what buffer to use in what barrel.

It all depends on gas port size, barrel length, temperature, ammo etc...

Use the heaviest buffer that will reliably lock back on empty mags.

No apologies necessary.
Freely post ANY of my pictures that have my logo embedded in them.
I made them to educate people.

I keep a whole collection of pictures here.
You can freely use them as long as you comply with the "read this first" text file in that directory.
Link directly to the pictures.
That way, when I update them from time-to-time, the old postings will get the new picture.
My buffers picture that you posted above has been updated 2 times since it's initial inception.
If anyone ever takes apart their HK granualar buffer and photographs it, I'll add that to it as well.
