On the rifle length RAS rails, why are the side rails shorter than the top & bottom?  What's the point of the little plastic tabs on there?  Why not an extra inch & a half of rail on each side?

So the military can mount M203's and keep the top rail. The upper part of the RAS has the 9, 12 and 3 oclock rails. The bottom is only the 6 oclock. The plastic tabs I believe are to just keep dirt out as much as possible. The part of the 203 mount that goes over the barrel is wider than the inside of the RAS handguards thats why they are short by an inch and a half on each side.

Bingo.  That's the kind of answer I was looking for, thanks.  Makes perfect sense.
