Hello folks, I am brand new here.  I want to pick up my first AR very soon.  The main functions of this rifle will be as follows.  100% of the time it will be my home defense weapon.  I'm not going to carry it around my house or anything, but it will be next to my bed.  As far as shooting goes, I will be trying to get to the range more often and I will also use it for medium range (100-200yd) small game/varmit/predator.  I probably won't be carrying it a whole lot, except for when I go to my hunting shack.  Accuracy is very important to me and far outweighs any weight concerns.  If I order this rifle I would like it in green with the .03 aperature and 1/4 adjustments.  On RRA's website it seems like the weight of the rifle should make it a heavy barrel, but the picture doesn't look like it.  Eventually I will put on a quad rail and a down grip.  I am also going to buy a super sniper 16 or 20x scope for the gophers.  I need a quick detach system to make it easy to use the carry handle and switch to scope.  I am thinking about using A.R.M.S. #22 medium or high rings and then putting a small red dot on top of the scope.  OK, ok, I really need some input and advice.  What am I forgetting?  Are there better rifles out there for my needs?  My budget is 1400 for the rifle, give or take a little.  Does anyone know why this rifle is so heavy?
Thanks a million!

For close in - in the home defense my preference is for a short barrel 12GA shotgun with appropriat load and or a .45 Caliber pistol.  My concern at very close range would be over penetration of on target and missed shots with the .223 round.  AR is my barbarians at the gate gun not in home defense.  FWIW MHO your milage may vary.

I have a 12ga also for this purpose.  I don't think you can ever have too many guns at your disposal.ho,Thanks for the post.

If you are going to put a quad rail on it I say skip the NM version. Get a standard A4 with the SS barrel and have your detachable carry handle with the NM sights. If you go this route you will save around  $100 that can go toward your free flaot rail. I went that route except I did'nt get the sights. The barrel is'nt a bull barrel but an HBAR profile. It's not that heavy if you ask me.

ETA: Most of the weight on the NM comes from the barrel, free floating barrel sleeve and I think there is a weight in the buttstock to make it balance better. I really think you would be better served with a the A4 rifle and upgrade to the SS barrel( $50 more than the standard A4), it's the same barrel used on the NM model. That should cost you around $850-$900 unless the prices have gone up since I bought mine.

Alright!  So, how is the accuracy of the standard A4 with the stainless barrel?  Is the NM receiver the same as the standard upper/lower?  Without putting a quad rail on, is there a way to put a forward grip on a regular handguard?  Also, where is a good place to look for these guns?  I've been to gunbroker, but I can't find a good selection anywhere.  It sux being a newbie.
Thanks for the help.

If you free float the SS A4 it should be the same as a NM. I think the specs call for 1 MOA accuracy with match grade ammo. I'd bet it would be sub MOA. As you can see my build is'nt completed yet so I can't give you any first hand experience with it, only what I have read from others. There are some rails that fit into the vented holes of a regular handguard and you can mount a foreward grip. I think Bravo Company sells a package, it's not very expensive. I would check the EE here for a complete rifle and have it sent to a local FFL. Your FFL should charge you anywhere from $10-$30 for a transfer. I hope this helps....

Eh, keep checking Gunbroker.  In fact, I think this is exactly what you're looking for:

Rock River Arms Stainless 20" A-4 NIB

I've been shopping around as well....

Thanks.  How difficult is it to mount a free float quad rail on a rifle like this?  Do you need to remove the front site or the barrel?

I've never done it either.  You don't remove the barrel, but the front sight/gas block.  I tried to remove my front sight post from my Bushy, but something tells me its not quite mil-spec....

Anyway, I've never tried on RRA, but I don't think it would be too difficult.

Hey, on gunbroker there is a 16" stainless 1:8 free float rra with a lightweight quadrail.  Will this rifle be accurate enough to take out some dogs at a couple hundred yards?

If I had to guess, I'd say it should be.

I'm looking at a RRA catalog right now.  They do have a 16 inch stainless steel varmint model.  I'm not sure if its the same one you're talking about or not.  Anyway, they say this one is capable of 3/4 MOA at 100 yards.

So here I am.  I put a bid on the a4 standard listed above.  I am hoping that this will get me the accuracy that I need.  I am planning on getting a free float quad rail, a flip up rear sight and a new buttstock.  Hopefully with the money I save doing it this way I can afford some of these parts.  Here are some questions that I still have lingering.  I think I'm going to go with the YHM lightweight freefloat.  Is this a good choice?  Next, I'd like to pick up an ACE Socom stock.  I think I'll need the longer one to get the legnth of a standard A2 buttstock.  Will I need the whole assembly or just the stock?  The flip up rear sight is not too high on my priority list, but I still am not sure which one to get.  Along those lines I am also going to pickup a KHS front sight cross-hair aperature.  Now I'll just need a good throw-lever base or rings set to mount my 30mm scope.  Is a gas buster charging handle really necesary?  I really wish I could get all of this stuff in OD but I haven't found any yet.
What do you think?

I think if I had known all this, I would have told you to just get a kit.

But no, you'll be fine.  I can't wait to see the final product.  One of the great things about AR's, is you can customize the heck out of them to your specific need.  I honestly have no idea about the Ace stock though.  I've always like the M4 buttstock, and probably will end up putting it on my 20 inch rifle, Yeah, some people say it looks goofy, but its my rifle...I can do what I want with it!

I'm so psyched!  Wow, I can't believe I spelled that right the first time.  I have always wanted an AR.  This is going to be great!  Gophers beware.
