| I traded into a Stag Arms 6.8 SPC. The previous owner put on a Yakee Hill free float quad rail and a brownells gas block with a rail. I went to go put a front flip up sight on the gasblock only to discover that it is mounted off center. The sight is on a angle. This gas block is held in place by three allen head set screws. One of the set screws was stripped really badly. I couldnt get it out with the set of Craftsman stipped screw removers I have. I had to drill out the screw and dimpled the barrel. The barrel is thickest aroun the Gas block and tapers down on both sides of where the gas block mounts. The dimple is a little more than half as deep as the pin cuts for the original pinned in gas block. The barrel is just as thick in place that it is dimpled(the larger area that the gas block mounts to). Is this OK? Or is the barrel a goner. If the barrel is ok what will this effect. Thank you for your help. |

I decided to stop just eyeballing the depth of the hole that I so stupidly drilled and mesure it. Its 1/16 of an inch, well a hair less and I mean a hair. I want to insert the set screw back in that hole to more secure the gas block but i removed the threads in that hole. I do have another gas block of the same make so Im going to make the switch later this week. Again, I appreciate all your help. |
I tried to respond to your PM, but you are not accepting PM's at this time so i will answer here instead...
I am not accepting orders for custom barrels made from scratch right now due to my excessive backlog. I do have some 18" stainless 6.8 SPC barrels in stock that I can work with though. These are medium weight mid-length barrels. No problem to shorten to 16" of that's what you wanted. They don't have front sight bases on them so they are best used with a freefloat handguard and optic sights. I do have a couple different flip-up front sights that could also be installed on the barrel. Looking at $400 for a barrel with a complete 6.8 SPC bolt carrier group. I typically drill detents about 0.030" to 0.040" deep, but a full 1/16" would not be anything to worry about. Randall |
