Does anyone have any experience with the Mega Machine Shop Mega-Gator lower? I've an opportunity to get a stripped lower and matching A3 upper but cannot find any info anywhere except for one guy saying it's great. TIA |
|
Thanks all for the feedback! Looks like I've found somewhat of an opportunity given the fact that I've never heard anything bad about them and I can't find anyone that has one in stock... This leads me to my next question: What might good price for the pair? They're brand new and the upper is complete with forward assist and dust cover (not sure whose parts here yet). Looks like someone ordered these quite a while back, they delivered to the FFL and the guy never showed up to get them. I couldn't get a price from the guy behind the counter, he said I'd have to talk to the manager to set up a deal. uspshooter |
| I've got a few of their lowers and matching uppers with "MEGA" on it. You can't go wrong with their lowers. They are my favorites. I do have an issue with their upper. The area that catches the latch on the charging handle isn't as beffy as other upper I've seen. I've got one that wore down quickly. These are uppers I got around 2-3 years ago. I haven't seen any of the new stuff but I hope they are different. |
They make receivers for a pretty substantial amount of companies, and that, combined with their primary focus on the aerospace industry means that those of us in the weapon community feel a little left out at times. Thankfully, Mega has dedicated some of their CNC equipment to receiver production, so hopefully we will start to see a little relief pretty soon. For whatever its worth, they are nice guys. |
+1, I love stag, but these are better IMO, they are also "low shelf" for the DIAS |
|
I have a Mega upper and lower combo but heard that the uppers may be out of spec, Im keep watching the "mega" threads and cant find out any new info on the uppers and where I heard this, Im not a team member so I can only look back 30 days. I was hoping to build a SPR type rifle out of the receivers but seems like most folks are using a CMT upper and not a mega. My Mega doesnt have the M4 feed ramps but Im not sure I give a rats ass about that. |
|
I have a MEGA upper waiting for the rest of my parts, I'm also on a waiting list for a MEGA lower. i have also heard about a run of MEGA uppers being "out of spec" but no-one can seem to point out anything other that it being related to the top rail, mine looks perfectly fine so I don't know what it is all about.. I love the finish! Call me a MEGA nut, but I went ahead and got their matching CH, since I like their finish so much, I want everything to match. Mine also does not have m4 ramps, but seeing as how I'm not building an "m4", I too could not give a rats ass :D |
Bump for an answer..hopefully. |
Answer to what? |
There is a rumor floating around that the Mega upper can be out of spec, I am trying to find out if that is true or not. If you read back on page 1 I ask if a CMT uppper is being used all the time, why not a Mega upper....I have a matching upper and lower but Im not going to build on a out of spec upper but I cant seem to find out where I heard that info before.

| A while back Mega had a batch of uppers with the rail being either too wide or too narrow, can't remember which. Supposedly it was fixed. I'm not so impressed with the oura (sp?) of Megas. I have a Mega upper and lower that wobbles like a drunken sailor. When I talked to mega about it, they said tolerances can be off by .006" and be in spec. I'm assuming that's +/- .003" from spec, which is still way too much using modern day cnc. Anyway I have a Stag that was much easier to come by, cheaper, and machining just as nice, and an Stag upper that fits it like it was machined as a matched set, and this is not the first Stag I have owned that was this way. Yes, the deer head and finish is not as attractive, but the tolerances are much better. The roll mark is nice, and you can't beat the teflon finish, but I think there are better choices out there. Just my 2 cents. |
I have 6 lowers and 7 uppers, all bought over the course of a few years, no two of them bought at the same time so the odds of them coming from the same batch are small. I can put any upper on any lower and they fit together "like it was machined as a matched set." |
| Ive got 4 of the lowers and uppers. They look as good as any other that I've seen... Although ive only seen my 4. lol. Got them from coldwarshooters.net, I think $120 each shipped and all. Uppers were around $900 ish, but they were pretty top notch with 1 in 7 barrels and D&D rails. Id buy more if I could find em... |
When the rumors originally surfaced about the rails being out of spec, it was confirmed by a vendor on these boards that they're stock of uppers was returned to Mega because of the problem. The deviation was small and was mostly a problem with ARMS products that cannot be adjusted. |
Thanks for telling the story and giving some details, atleast now i know what happened! What vendor was it, props to them! |
+1, could you give us some more info about this? I bought the upper second hand and Id hate to get her together to find out something is wrong and I have to get Mega to make me another only to find out the next batch isnt the same fit/finish...my combo matches almost perfectly as it is. |
|
New development for me. I've sent one of my Mega lowers back to them the mag well was out of spec. Mags would not drop free. And now I've just confirmed my second lower is out of spec, It's very loose with any upper I put on it. Brian at Mega is has stated he will replace both and I'm currently waiting to get the first one back. Just another learning experience for me I still love the Mega finish. And as long as they resolve these issues in a timely manner I'll continue to buy there product. I'll give and update In week JFYI... |
