All of my AR experience is with  16" or 10.5" rifles with adjustable stocks.
I am in the process of collecting parts to put together an M16A4 clone. It seems like some A2 stocks in the EE come with spacers and some don't. Do some A2 stocks require the spacer and others not? Does it depend on the manufacturer? Also seems like some are black and others are gray, some have the trap door and some don't. Can someone clarify this for me?
Much thanks.

All A2 stocks should have the spacer. There is a A1 stock that has the trapdoor similar to the A2 stock.

The A1 stock doesn't need the spacer cause it is 5/8" (I think that is the right length) shorter than the A2. The one without the trapdoor are early A1 stocks.

Hope that makes sense.

That's odd.  I was just thinking of asking the same question....
A few months ago, I bought a rock river A2 stock from one of the vendors who
advertize here, and there's no spacer.  I didn't know any better when I got it,
because it was my first A2 stock - nothing to compare it to.

So...  Is it something that is needed?

Yes, it is something that is needed. Did you buy the stock as a kit or just the butt stock? A kit should include the stock, spacer, A2 screw, receiver tube, spring & buffer. Buying the stock, gets you just that, the stock.

It was a "complete" kit - or so I thought.  Came with the stock, receiver extension,
the special screw, buffer, and spring...  Just no spacer.
Thanks for the info...

Okay, thanks now I know that I NEED the spacer. (and screw).

Is the trap door on the A2 an "upgrade"? Seems some come with it and some without.

Who are these A2 stock's made by that do not have a trapdoor? Do you have a link or picture you can post? I have never heard of such a thing. If they are mil-spec A2 stocks they will have a trapdoor.

Except that Rock River now puts a plastic door on their pieces, unless you pay extra (I think it's about $15) for the correct metal piece.

And to my knowlwdge, there are NO A2 stocks w/o a door. I suspect the person who posted this was either thinking of the first issue M16/M16A1 pieces that are floating around, or maybe collapsible carbine types.

I don't have a pic or link. Just seems that some of the pics I've seen of them in the EE didn't appear to have the trap door. Probably because of the angle of the pic.
Good info though, thanks.

Here's a link to a picture thread I did awhile ago comparing the original equipment fixed stocks. Hopefully it'll help you out.
