RRA offers several quad rails for their rifles, YHM, Surefire, and Daniel Denfense. There is a huge difference in price between the brands... about 120 for the YHM, 200 for the Surefire, and 300 for the DD. Assuming proper installation, is there any functional difference in quality to justify picking one over the other? |

I have a YHM free-float on a gun of mine & am not very happy with it because it moves some, & I could never get my YHM buis to go far enough to the left to sight in properly. The whole system is theirs, but something doesn't line up. I can use the sights on others fine. I have the customizable rail & gave up when the tiny screws that hold the rail on gave out & the whole thing fell off. (I was lightly tapping it to slide a scope base down the rail). I went to the other extreme & bought a POF that I can't imagine moving on me. A 'smith is installing it for me. good luck. |
All of this sounds like a poor installation. Proper torque on the barrel nut and locking ring combined with the anti-rotation screws and loctite those small flat head screws and it's not coming apart or moving around. I have never had a complaint about them moving when I put them together. I suppose that if you did NOT have the proper tools, this would surely be an issue. I have seen lots of people talk about tightening the lock ring into place with a screwdriver and hammer...

I actually paid a gunsmith to do the work. He doesn't specialize in AR's or anything, just guns in general, but seems to have quite a few ARs go thru the shop. I was actually sent to him to fix something another 'smith screwed up. Guess no-one's perfect at everything though. Do you know of any probs with the POF system? It seems this would be more foolproof than other designs, but also has some drawbacks (size). Foolproof is very attractive to me. Thanks |
I can't help you on the POF. They seem to be pretty solid but I have never had one through my shop to play with. Personally, I don't like the height of that rail, but that's just me. The design principal is VERY good. |
Tell you what... Send me that upper. I'll re-do the handguard install and get the sights closer into alignment. If you don't see a noticable improvement when you get it back, there's no charge. |
I am impatiently waiting for my refund check so I can blow a grand on my first AR. FF handguards is one area that I can't seem to make up my mind. Hence the Tag. I am interested in what folks have to say about the YHM lightweight 4 rail tubes. I plan to order from CMMG. They'll put the YHM HG on for me if I decide to get the YHM HG. Yeah the YHM are fugly, but I'm more interested in function rather than looks. I return you to your regularly scheduled thread ZM |
| The YHM rails work well for the price. I have 2 of the LW rails (1 mid, 1 full) and both work just fine. If I was using the rifle for hard use/duty I might step up to a Larue or Daniel Defense. The Surefire is fine too if you don't need/want a free floater. If money is no object, go with the DD. Most people would be better spending the $200 on ammo and shooting more. |
If you don't want to wait as long for that 458 Socom, drop me a line. I have pre-ordered them a year ago and I SHOULD be the very first dealer that they get shipped to based on the fact that I ordered them within hours of when they went up on RRA's new website in February 2006. I'm not taking deposits, but I do have a list of people that I will contact just as soon as they uppers are in my hands (whenever that may turn out to be...). |
Where do you live in Fl????? I am in Jax. and I have all the tools for the YHM FF. I also own 5 Specter YHM FF and not one of the ever moves when I get done with them... Trust me.... its the tools Slug-O |
