Any advice on a good, accurate varmint upper? Looking at Rock River, White Oak, and Accuracy Systems. Accuracy Systems seem to be priced quite a bit higher. It will be fit to a Sundevil Mfg lower if that makes any difference.

Any positives or negatives or other brands to look at would be appreciated -

I can't comment on Accuracy Systems, but I've dealt with RRA and WOA.

Both RRA and WOA use match-grade Wilson blanks.  In my opinion, RRA is the larger, "mass production" manufacturer and I feel they cannot control all the subtle details behind chambering and indexing a precision rifle barrel.  Don't get me wrong, they shoot well, but they are cut and assembled much differently than WOA uppers.

By contrast, WOA is a run by John Holliger, a long time high power shooter. He turns and chambers the Wilson blanks in his own machine shop, and his crew is dedicated to building barrels exclusively for sub MOA accuracy.  Building precision rifles is what they do for a living.  I believe there is a lot more attention to detail with WOA's uppers.

You can't go wrong with either, but for the same money you will be purchasing more of a "custom upper" if you go the WOA route.

Thanks for the reply. That is kind of my impression comparing WOA and RRA. I guess I'm hoping for something better that MOA - maybe .5 MOA - and the Accuracy Systems advertise that they are good for that. Do you think that with the proper reload a WOA can shoot .5?

Thanks again -

Midway has a sale on 20" complete uppers for around 450.  A friend of mine bought one and was really happy with it.

My 18" SPR barrel is 1/2 MOA all day long with Black Hills 77 grain blue box.

A proper handload will certainly make your barrel shoot its best

I own an Accuracy Systems Upper in 204R, when I ordered it I told him I wanted to shoot 100% 40g bullets at the .5" guarantee he said no problem. So I ordered it and waited 10 weeks for delivery and I get a test target with 32g bullets that meet the .5" guarantee. So I break in the barrel via Accuracy systems instructions and load up so 40 gr's......guess what it won't do .5" with 40ger's in fact if your lucky it'll shoot 1moa with them. It will hold the .5 with handloaded 32's though, but that doesn't help me much.

Now I also have a Model 1 sales varmint upper in 223 with a heavy fluted chome moly 1/9 twist barrel, it cost $300-$400 less than my "custom built" one from Accuracy systems AND it out shoots it!!!! OH and I ordered my M1S upper on a Monday and had it that Friday!.......So IMO save your money and time and buy from anyone but Accuracy Systems.

Since Accuracy Systems gave you a guarantee, have you tried to call them on it? Seems like it fails to meet their spec -

I have heard that the 204 can be a bit of a challenge to find a load that works well -

I am going to call him, but I don't have much to stand on because the guarantee just states that it will shoot .5" MOA nothing about bullet weight, that was just a personal conversation. And the upper will do .5 MOA with 32 grner's. What it boils down to is that the barrel needed to be 1/11 or 1/10 twist instead of 1/12 but he should have known that after I told him I wasn't interested in shooting 32g bullets. But I will call this week and see what he says.
