I have been looking at the Yankee Hill forends for my 9mm AR. Can't decide if I want to go free floated or use their 2 piece design. I already have all the tools to put on the free floated. Any suggestions?

Anyone have any experience with either of these?

I have installed quite a few of the free float systems.

People here don't like them because they are not "tacticool"
This is basically because they are not expensive enough.
Posting pictures of your rifle here wearing YHM handguards labels you as cheap.
If you can get past that and just want a decent hand guard for a good price, then YHM is for you.

There is not much need for a free float system on a 9mm carbine, but in my opinion, the freefloats are more solid which is enough reason to step-up to the better system.

The free float version will require full diss-assembly of the upper which is a concern if you don't have the tools.

Only real known issues on these are that TD vertical foregrips will not fit without modification to the grip.
Some people complain about them feeling "fat" because they are wider than LaRue/Daniel Defense.

The good thing on YHM freefloats is that the inside is so big it will fit over almost any low profile gas block so if you want to run a longer rail, go right ahead.

All my AR's are free floated. It is the only way to go in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with the YHM tubes either. I have them on 2 of my rifles and they are on a couple others that I helped friends build. They are very solid. Call me cheap if you want but I buy what works. I don't have safe queens.

Thanks for the responses. I have been impressed with YHM products and customer service. That is one reason I was looking at their rail. After looking at it all, I think I will just wait and put the $ towards SBR.
