Our bitching has no place in the tech forums.

Seriously?  Over 6,000 posts and you've never discussed this?  Okay . . .

There is a vertical hole in the top of the barrel that bleeds out a bit of gas pressure from each fired round.

The purpose of the gas block is to provide a seal around the barrel at this vertical hole ensuring this bled gas is redirected back down the gas tube.  This gas provides the energy necessary to cycle the action.

An AR-15 is a gas operated rifle, and the gas comes from the barrel via the gas block.

Holy shit!

The gas block is what channels the gas bled off the barrel down the gas tube so that your AR cycles.

And the hole in the end of the barrel is where the bullet comes out.

I know how the ar operates.  I'm wanting to know what the difference that the different size ones make.

I know how the ar operates.  But gas blocks like I see alot of put on aftermarket are not something that's common everyday stuff unless they are hidden somewhere inside the rifle that I don't know of.

The gas block on a standard AR is part of the FSB.  When you have no FSB, or a rail that goes over the gas port, you need another sort of gas block.

You know, I learned the hard way to keep this crap in the GD forum.  You'd be well advised to do the same.
