I just purchased a Troy rail off the board.  I know that I will need to remove the Delta Ring in order to install the rail.  How difficult is this?  Do I remove just the ring, or the ring, spring ect. that makes up the whole Delta Ring Assembly?

Any tips and/or tricks to installing a Troy rail I should know about?  I'm kinda nervous stepping up to a rail system that does more than snap in place.

Thanks,
Gary

Check out the tacked thread in the Build It Yourself forum.  It shows how to install a Troy rail.

D-ring, spring, and clip all come off to install the Troy (at least that was the case with my MRF-C).  I just Dremelled mine off with a cutting disk, it was pretty easy and that was the first time I ever used a Dremel!

It's a good idea to cover the rest of your upper with a towel or something to keep all those little metal flakes off; plus some kind of cover will help protect your upper in case you get a little over-exhuberant (or clumsy) with the Dremel tool.

Troy HG installs pretty easily; mine was a little tight but certainly nothing to bitch too much about.

The proper way to remove the delta ring is to remove the barrel.  The Delta ring assembly will then slide off once the snap ring is removed with snap ring pliers.

Assuming you don't want to remove the barrel the next best thing to do is cut the delta ring off with a small, thin, cut-off wheel normally used with a Dremel type tool.

I would recommend taping or masking all other areas of the rifle to avoid inadvertent scratches from the cut-off wheel.  Use two hands on the Dremel tool and go slowly.  Cut the ring in two places and remove it as two pieces.

Once the aluminum ring is removed, the steel compression spring and snap ring can be removed by simply bending them open with some Vise-grips or large pliers.  All three pieces (delta ring, spring, and snap ring) must be removed leaving only the steel barrel nut.

There will be a lot of aluminum dust everywhere.  Use compressed air or a can of compressed degreaser to blow the dust off your rifle.

It's not a big deal to do this and you'll be very happy with your Troy rail and your accomplishment.
