Looking for a Left Hand AR15 for basic target shooting.  Probably shoot with iron sights and yet be able to switch to some type of enhanced optics.  Only time I shot was at a MCAS for qualification, being a token squid on the base.  136 for a lefty and only DCM experience with an O3-A3 and a Garand in the seventies. I only have found Stag to offer a true left hand AR15.  Is there any other makers? I am open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks,
Chris - Pensacola

As a lefty, I ask "Why?". Your '03 & Garand weren't lefty oriented. Worked, did they not? Going with lefty only poses some issues like replacement parts. I have several "normal" ARs and have no problems with any of them.  As I believe Col. Cooper once stated, "it's a perfect solution for a non-existent problem".

Fellow lefty here too...

I have several ARs, and have never seen an actual "need" for a left-handed AR.  I've never had an issue with the ejection port being on "my" side, and find that I like being able to see in the chamber easily when pulling back the CH.

For my personal comfort and most convenient operation, I install Stag or DPMS ambi safeties and Norgon Ambi-catch on ALL my ARs.  You CAN learn to operate the AR without these things, but it's still easier to do it the way "righties" do.

If you still WANT a left handed AR, the Stag is said to be the best.  The only other one I know of is DPMS.

*Quick note:  For all Ambi-catch users who post that you can't eject loaded mags from yours...  Try unscrewing it a turn or two and trying again.  None of mine had EVER given me the problem you guys have complained about, until after I'd read about it and installed my latest in a new upper.  At first, I thought one of you guys jinxed me...  then I mulled it over a bit, compared with my others, and noticed that the stud seemed to be sticking out from the button more than the others.  I unscrewed one turn, and the problem went away.

i'm a lefty too, and have ambi safeties and norgon ambi-catches on all my lowers. i've never had a problem with a right-side ejection port or cases going in my face. actually, i prefer having a normal right-side port so i can see at a glance what's going on with the bolt carrier if there's a stoppage (double feed, etc). it's also easier to confirm the chamber is loaded or empty and when the gun is run dry. all without having to break cheek weld.

I am a lefty also and I DO like my stag arms lefty AR so much so I am building a left handed ar pistol. Many are ok using a AR that is made for a righty as I don't mind using a right handed AR, but as with most lefties make use of items made for right handed person and until they use something made for a left handed person they don't see it as a problem they just make do.

One thing I did notice is when I let a right handed friend shoot my AR he had problems getting use to it. As if the AR was made the other way first most right handed people would want it switched.

Also something I read is that up to 30% of the population is either left handed or left eye dominant so there should be more left handed fireams made.

Other than the bolt, and the upper, what other parts would be exclusive for a lefty rifle?

My son is a lefty, and left eye dominant, so he is getting a left handed stag upper for x-mas.  He does shoot my righties with out a problem, but this one he will call his own.

Bolt carrier with forward assist cuts on opposite side.
Ambidexterous barrel extension has chamfers on both sides of the locking lugs to accomodate a bolt locking in the opposite direction.
Ambidexterous safety selector.
Ambidexterous mag catch.

So I guess that means that the recon barrel that I have from WOA may not work with the lefty bolt.

You can try it.
It might work fine.
If there is any hesitation in lockup, I would not use it.
Maybe you can exchange the barrel with WOA for one using a Stag AMBI extension if you have not used the barrel yet.

Here are the little chamfers I am talking about:

Thanks for sharing the picture of the chamfers, I was trying to see them on my barrel extention last night.  I have not used the barrel yet, so maybe I will give John a shout over at WOA.  Again, thank you for all the good info on this subject, this site, and the people on it are the best.
