So let me start by saying I am somewat new to ARs ...

I own a SW MP15 and just completed my first lower build based on a Spikes lower ....

Ive been looking at some posts about the differences in lowers and other than the quality of rollmarks, smoothness and other cosmetic differences I dont understand what makes some better than others.

Can some one please explain it to me?

psss -- I think my Spikes lower is great and cant see differences -- not to say there is not.

Any forged aluminum lower is basically the same as another forged aluminum lower beyond what you already stated.

Only differences (other than cosmetic, as mentioned) come into play with different construction/manufacturing techniques - i.e., forged vs. billet vs. cast vs. polymer/aramid fiber.

Just stick with forged, or billet if you should feel the need to spend the $$ for the newest tacticool lower.

In general, a lower is a lower is a lower.

so in all reality, it wouldn't make any difference accuracy wise to go stag/cmt over mega or lauer custom?

The upper is where it matters more for accuracy, not the lower. (The only component in the lower that has a substantial effect on practical accuracy is the trigger.)

Ok so what's with the new fad? The only cool thing besides the chicks dig it factor I can see in the new billet lowers is the integral trigger guards and magpul's ambi-fence. I agree with you guys. The accuracy is in the upper and I can see a benefit from the new billet uppers out there but not the lowers. Am I missing something?

Pretty much.  I can understand the benefits of a billet upper that is guaranteed true, but as far as billet lowers go it's just CDI, added features, and some say the guarantee that you will not have out of spec pin holes and other such problems (although, much like billet uppers, that isn't so much due to the fact that it's billet, but more to the care taken by the manufacturer).

so then my beliefs are confirmed -- its really just cosmetics ...

In that case -- I think my $90 (out the door) Spikes tactical lower that came already engraved with the punisher logo I wanted is just perfect.

I also like my Spikes pistol lowers -- they were also $90 :)
