It seems like a step backward...

Not that I PLAN or think I will ever  be involved in a prolonged fire-fight (or any for that matter) I would think that the build-up of heat and carbon could lead to a FTF (regardless of fit and finish and ammo selection) and that the FA would come in very handy...

Preparing for enlightenment...

I suppose if it were just a "messing around" weapon, some people would put cosmetics over reliability.  I like the look of the assist.

Lighter and cheaper (at least when ordered in similar quantities).

Do you actually use yours?  I don't think I ever have so I could probably do without.

I can't say I've ever used the forward assist on my AR.  Granted I've never used it for prolonged periods between cleanings, or in a "real world" environment.

Because the bolt for the 9mm SMG does not come equiped with the cuts for a forward assist.

Dont need FWD assist on a varmint rifle

Only time Iv'e using my FA was after installing new gas rings, you need to use the assist to close the bolt for the first 3 to 5 shots to break the rings in.

I always tap it generally when putting in new mag/charging.  Habit, don't recall ever actually needing too...

Its a useful device to have.  Unless its a retro collectors build, I'd have it on any SHTF/Zombie gun.

It's just an unnecessary feature added due to a perceived need.  Much like the BHP magazine disconnect, once it was added, it just wouldn't go away.  I now have M16 slickside receivers on a couple builds.  They look great, look right, and improve the handling of the weapon.  I have never used a FA, nor can I imagine a circumstance where it isn't more likely to cause a worse malfunction than the one it is correcting.

It is hard to argue with the simplicity and clean lines of this GUU-5P:

If I was going into combat I'd want one. Being stuck with a jammed weapon in a firefight would be something of an inconvieniance. Otherwise...it's not very usefull. I've had to use it once, because the magazine follower tilted and the round didn't feed at the right angle. I switched it out with a magpul follower and haven't had a problem since.

On the rare FTF I've had, I've used the FA.  Didn't do anything, but I used it without thinking.  The remnants of the S.P.O.R.T.S. technique, I suppose.

The only reason I have ever found to use it is with a dry, dirty rifle that didn't want to chamber. That might be enough reason to keep it. SPORTS is a silly drill anyway.

Oh, it absolutely is.  But I still hit that FA automatically on a FTF.

Reason for having a FA.

How about for closing the bolt quietly? Rather than just letting go of the charging handle and letting it slam home.

I can think of a few situations where this is desirable.

I have to TRY to get it to hang up like that, and I can thumb it forward.

I always tap it after doing a brass check when chambering a round.  Just force of habit from the years I carried one.  My attitude is that while it may not be strictly necessary, much like an emergency brake if you live in Kansas, but it's nice to have.

IMHO its sorta stupid to have on a range weapon.  if you only want it for the "look" of a combat weapon then thats ok too.

Saw a guy at the range one day, bumping his shell deflector, I looked at him and said, "let me guess, you are just used to doing it"  He said, "ya feels funny, but I cant stop myself"
