After 30-40 rds, my ff hg is getting too hot to hold.

What can I do?

If it is a aluminum tube FF handguard many people wrap the HG with parachute cord.

get a vented one.  wear gloves.  a color other than black helps in the summer sun as well.

You can start by telling us what Model FF hand guard and if you are running and rail covers on it. if your not... there's your answer.

Thinks like Paracord and VFGs and gloves will help, but you should be able to run with just a rail if you have covers for moderate amounts of rapid fire.

It's just a solid ff aluminum tube.  I guess the paracord is the answer.

Paracord is TOTALLY the solution. I do it on all my FF tubes and it works great ! The drawing above shows the procedure very clearly. The only other advice I have is to soak the paracord in water before wrapping... when it dries, it will shrink and tighten down even more. Here are some pics:

Isn't 550 made of nylon, which in turn will melt to your FF tube if it gets hot?

Ditch it.  I don't know why anyone still makes them.  Get a rail to vent the heat.

Will the 550 cord melt?

Not everyone likes rails on their rifles...

You could:

Have vent holes drilled at 3:00 and 9:00
Purchase a vented tube
Purchase a DPMS or Clark's Custom Carbon Fiber tube

I have a shooting buddy with one of the standard Bushmaster aluminum V-match tubes, and you're right... one or two mags full and it's too hot to hold!  Thanks to opinions solicited from infsqdldr and others, I went with a YHM customizeable float tube, and mine is definitely NOT as hot.

I don't know how well it works yet, but the guy from Ko-tonics told me that "Tactical Grey" makes a huge difference over black on aluminum tubes.  I will probably try it out to see for myself.

P.S. - I have used 550 cord to attach a sling to the front sight base and it did not melt.  I still replaced it with something better, but no problems with it.

NIC Industries (who make Cerakote) calls the color Tactical Grey (their spelling.)  It's a medium gray that does a very good job of keeping the handguard cool.  I was out shooting our "concept gun" in the sun and the handguard never got hot.

Actual color is darker than this pic.  In bright light it looks lighter.

I will do anyone's free-float tube for $10.  It is a good looking and cheap solution.  Just send me the tube.
