Well, this is my first post and I need some help I've had this AR for a little less than a year and have loved it since the first day I got it, but now i'm wondering what kind of barrel I actually have. I know it is a 16" and it looks to be the same diameter as my standard 20" but under the handguard it is larger in diameter. Without removing the barrel from the Upper but taking off the handguard I see 2 sets of markings. In front of the A2 front sight I see: SUM 5.56 Just in front of where the barrel scres into the upper I see: UM From what I have seen I was thinking it was a Stainless Ultra Match by Olympic, but tonight I took a magnet to her and she is magnetic, maybe i'm just a clueless 22 year old, but can someone help me find out what i've got here. Thanks for your help |

Like you suspected, SUM = Stainless Ultra Match from Olympic. I don't get the magnet thing. The magnet should stick to it because stainless, esp the 416 that is used for barrels, is still mostly iron. ETA you mention that it is heavier under the handguards than in front, that is what people mean when they refer to an "HBAR" profile. Pretty much everything from the major civilian manufacturers is this profile. Especially when the barrel is stainless because stainless needs to be thicker to maintain strength when hot. |
