Anyone know a good price for one of these and where I can get one. Thanks

| EE is a good place to look. You either like them or hate them, and with the glut of FF rails they have lost a lot of favor so a lot of people buy them and end up selling them on EE. I bought two on the EE, both for $200-250 with a grip and at least three rails. Both in very good condition. |
Wierd, isn't the KAC M5 the issue for new M16A4 USMC rifles? I'd figure there would be more people buying them

Put up a post about putting optics on the M5, or any non-FF rail. Howls of impending doom and the End of Days will flow forth from Arfcom. The Arfcom arms race dictates that any rail should be FF. Admittedly, for the price, you can put a FF rail on a rifle as easily as the M5, so a lot of people go that route. |

I have two M5 RAS equipped uppers with 20" gov't barrels that will never be near match grade accuracy but good enough for minute-of-man. For myself, placing an optic on the rail itself is not what I see as practical. The rails exists for me to put on a VFG or lights. The rail on the upper receiver is where optics should go. I can switch back to the regular handguards anytime I want. Plus I hate removing FSBs. If I want a free floater, I would use a good barrel with it and save me the trouble. |

I pretty much agree with you. My A4 is not for accuracy; I've got a VFG, light, and that's it. I can put a bipod on it when I feel like running an ACOG. For accuracy work, I've got other choices. For those that want to run an M68, it is meant to work forward of the receiver (although it does do just fine on the upper) and the FF rails work for that for about the same price. For a lot of shooters, I would say that there may not even be an appreciable drop in practical accuracy using the M5 with an M68 at practical distances. |
That is correct, more than 40,000 in the Corps, at least that many in the Army, Air Force, etc. In fact, to most people, the presence of an M5 RAS helps define what an M16A4 is. However, the TM will tell you the RAS is something you elect to install later to an issue rifle with a 3-round burst control and a flat-top upper. The lack of civilian sales for the M5 is kind of interesting. There have been many sold to collectors who place a premium on authenticity. Many others who just have a rifle as well as a carbine or two, and want to share expensive acessories between the two. But the biggest fact is the overwhelming popularity of the Carbine with folks, like us, that love to modifiy tools, automobiles, or whatever for individual uses and tastes. |
