The dealer I work with has the exact model rifle I want in stock, except that it has a stainless steel barrel and I wanted a chrome-lined barrel. I have always heard that stainless was more accurate, but chrome lined was more durable. Is this true? If so, is it a big enough difference to matter? It would take 2 months to order the same rifle with the chrome lined barrel and I'm trying to decide if it is worth it. Also, the stainless barrel is chambered for .223 Wylde where as the chrome lined barrel would be 5.56 NATO. From what I read (on wikipedia) the .223 Wylde is an intermediate chamber that can reliablely handle both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. Is this the case? I do not want to be limited in which rounds I will be able to use. And... the stainless has a 1:8 twist where as the chrome lined would have 1:9. What difference would that make? Thanks for the info. The dealer has agreed to hold the rifle with no deposit for 24 hours while I do my research and make a decision. Just for your info, it is a RRA Mid-Length A4 with an A2 bird cage and a 6 position collapsible stock. |

Just because a barrel is stainless does not mean it will produce better groups. A .223 Wylde chamber will not always be reliable with 5.56 pressure heavy match ammo. Id get a chrome lined 1/7 twist 5.56 chambered midlength with govt profile if I were you. But RRA does not make that and you wont listen to my advice so buy whatever you want and justify it accordingly to yourself. You can get the HBAR 1/9 that you can shoot the light ammo you will never use and withstand the full auto abuse it will never see or the 1/8 stainless that is not a high end match barrel that you will think is more accurate even though accuracy is not much improved over its chrome lined sibling. Either will make you happy. |

Well thanks for the feedback. Always nice when I ask for someone's opinion for them to deliver it with a heaping helping of holier than thou BS attached to it and a side of condesending arogance. If I didn't want your opinion, I wouldn't have asked for it. Why do I bother with some people? |

I'm debating the same exact setup, SS vs. CL. What I've been told is that you won't notice that accuracy benifit of the SS unless you're only shooting match ammo. The Wylde chamber will handle 5.56 and .223, I've shot M855 and rem .223 out of mine, with no problems. I'm sure others have as well. If you have to wait 2 months for a chrome-lined...I'd just get the SS. Get it while the weather is still nice, unless you want to start shooting it in NOVEMBER *shivvers* |

One of the benefits of living in the South is that I can shoot outdoors about 10-1/2 months out of the year fairly comfortably (if you call 100 and 90% humidity comfortable). I can shoot the other 1-1/2 months outside if I don't mind looking like Kenny from South Park while I shoot. We only get about 1 snow per year and it is usually gone in 2-3 days. Pretty sure I'm going to go with the chrome-lined. Before I order it, I'm going to call all the dealers listed on RRA's website within a day trip's drive of me and see if any have the one I want in stock. I've already called all the ones in NC with no luck. One had it in Chrome-Moly, but not chrome-lined. Another had the one in stainless. If no one has it, and I can't find it online, I'll just order it and wait. |

Unless you plan to shoot match grade ammo, you will not see the benfits of a stainless barrel. If the orignal stainless barrel blank was not match grade, you will also see no benefits. Sounds to me like these are not your priorities; therefore I'd go with 4150 chromelined. You could get in line for Denny's Operator barrel, or pick up a CMMG. In any case, I would advise you not put down hard money for the stainless setup. |
