I started out researching a DPMS 260 as my first AR, the bad out weighs  the good from the input I can gather about DPMS. I went to Bushmaster that has a good rep in C/S, about a 6.5 to come out. They responded that no 6.5 was in there future plan but  a 6.8 spc would be out in Aug. I am looking for a long range accurate shooter (600yds+) in a AR. Hunting other than varmints is not a issue. Maybe I should go for a Bushmaster in 223 with a fast twist like 1:7, as I have lots of 223 brass. What say this board to a old salt that shoots rather than golf.

It sounds to me like you really should go with the 6.5 and the 223. Why not get one lower receiver and a complete upper receiver group for each caliber. Or you can always go with a complete rifle for both calibers. The 6.5 will shine at the longer ranges and hunting, for closer in the 223 will be good for varmints or just punching paper.

If you want a DPMS in 260 go for it. The DPMS 308s (260 in on the same platform) have a good reputation. The .223s are good too just there are better at similar prices. Don't be scared away from DPMS.

Most anti-DPMS posting here is based on old &/or hearsay information and most of that is about old cast lowers.  I know many happy DPMS owners.  I'm not sure about DPMS 6.8 SPC carbines, but Stag has, or will very soon, put their 6.8 on the market.

Jim as another old shooter, I have found the ease and reliability of the .223 to be a great way to go for a varmit rifle.  I have used my 24" Colt CR6724 with a Jewel trigger and big Leupold optics to 1106 yards on Pdogs.  The fast twist and heavy bullets are amazing at that range.  Until you do a significant amount of shooting at those distances you cannot believe the wonder of the .223.  I shoot a 7.62 x 39 Upper as well for more short range power, like whitetail hunting, but the accuracy and trouble free nature of the .223 has to be considered.  My 2 cents.

Good shooting which ever way you go.
