Can anyone explain in detail the physics behind how a flash hider extinguishes the flame from the end of the muzzle?

Thanks

Anybody in the weekday crowd have some insight?

I SUPPOSE it lets air ( read: Oxygen ) to the unburnt gases and allows them to burn completely while hiding the thus created flash from the rear and the side - so protecting night vision of the firer and his buddies nearby ( to the sides ).

This is just a theory, I don“t know for sure!

As they say: just my .02 ...

I take it you are actually asking about flash suppressors. Flash hiders are just conical looking devices that extend past the muzzle to hide the fireball.
I believe the slots in the f/s help to break up the gases that are being burned to lessen the fireball.(sending the gases in different directions) If I recall correctly, this is what the vortex does so well. If I'm wrong, I stand corrected.

They direct the gases to mix with Oxygen to burn the gases more completely and quickly(?) when they exit the barrel.
