Are chrome bolt carriers worth the extra money?  If so which ones are worth the money?  What do they do, besides being easier to clean?

They don't do a darned thing

And they're not all that much easier to clean.  It's just easier to spot the places you missed.

If you do decide to go chrome, for pete's sake stay away from the DPMS pieces. I had one once and it was very poorly finished, full of tool marks, the channels on the underside that clear the magazine lips weren't cut deep enough and some of my mags dragged on the underside.  Other have posted with the same comments, so my piece was not unique.

I will admit to owning a chrome bolt/carrier assembly, but it's a very early Colt Air Force M16 smoothside, that lives in the M16 clone at my house; and historical accuracy is the only reason I got it.

The Young/LBC carrier is probably the best of the chromed carriers if you are set on getting one.  DPMS the worst.

...How about the new LW/GP AIC?

Its not coated with anything, ElNi nor hard chrome.  Its an aerospace stainless type bolt, non stainless type extractor and teflon coated carrier. The only hard chrome is just like a standard carrier inside the carrier.

WE USE THE LES BAER CUSTOM AND YOUNG MFG N/M BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST WE'VE FOUND:

THEY ARE GETTING VERY HARD TO COME BY.

ANOTHER TRULY EXCELLENT CARRIER WE PLAN TO USE IN THE FUTURE IS THE J-P STAINLESS.

It's not quite hard chrome, but I had my bolt and carrier coated with NP-3. It's slick as can be and easy to clean.  The bolt and carrier are by CMT, very well made with few machine marks.

Wes,

Is the staking adequate on the Young and LB?

Thanks,

DAN YOUNG PROBABLY KNOWS AS MUCH ABOUT BOLT CARRIERS AS ANYONE. HE FEELS THAT RED LOCTITE ON CLEAN, QUALITY PARTS, PROPERLY TORQUED, IS ALL THAT IS REQUIRED. TESTIMONY TO THE VERACITY OF THIS CLAIM IS MY 1999 VINTAGE YOUNG MFG N/M CARRIER WITH NO STAKING AT ALL, STILL IN USE:

NOTE THAT THE ABOVE CARRIER IS IDENTICAL OTHER THAN THE MARKINGS TO THE LES BAER CUSTOM N/M CARRIER. YOUNG SOLD THE PATENT TO LES BAER, BUT STILL MANUFACTURES THEM FOR LES BAER CUSTOM.

IN THIS PIC, YOU CAN SEE THE PATENT NUMBERS ON BOTH CARRIERS:

YOUNG STAKES THE LBC CARRIER KEYS NOW "DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND", NO DOUBT, AS WELL AS USING THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED PROCEDURES.

IS THIS ADEQUATE? I'VE BEEN THROUGH LITERALLY HUNDREDS BUILDING CUSTOM UPPERS AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM, BUT MY ROUND COUNT PER CARRIER IS NORMALLY LESS THAN 100X.

DO I THINK THE GAS KEYS ARE SECURE? YES - OR I WOULD NOT LET THEM OUT THE DOOR.

un necessary uber tactical bling bling  so you want some iCE on your AR? what next GRILLZ?!!  Used a GI bolt & carrier in the desert and left in the sand...still worked to zero in a sandstorm.  Mental focus not equipment hocus pocus.  Why fix something that isn't broke?

I'VE HAD SOME 1911'S DONE IN NP-3, YEARS AGO. IT'S SLICK, NO DOUBT, AND CLEANS VERY EASILY, BUT WEARS NOWHERE NEAR AS WELL AS HARD CHROME.

I'VE READ THAT NP-3 COATED EXTRACTORS DO NOT WORK ....TOO SLICK!

WE ARE EXPERIMENTING WITH SOMETHING NEW IN COATINGS. WILL LET YOU KNOW IF IT PROVES TO BE BENEFICIAL.

I heard the same thing and seen a few here who just leave the extractor uncoated
