Is it possible to mount a rail on handguards with double heatshields. When I looked at the set I have the outermost shield ends up right on the plastic of the handguard. There is no room for a nut on the inside. Am I just out of luck.

I do plan on getting a set of railed handguards sometime in the future. I have other projects I need to get done first. DAMN BLACK RIFLE DISEASE!!

i would probably leave them as they are and just wait till you get a better setup.

but if you really want to just drill the heatshields where the nut will be.
