I'm thinking about getting a 20" varmit upper. I want to cut the barrel down to 18". Will I have to change the gas port size, or will it still function okay with the 20" size? I'm sure its been done, any body have any pictures?

Thanks.

I'd venture to guess that it will still function okay at 18".  I'd say that it's when you get down near 16" that problems may occur.

"Varmint uppers" are usually 24 inches.  I am just a little quizzical why you would want to get a varmint upper with a 20 inch barrel with the intent to cut the barrel down another 2 inches.  Do you realize you will be eschewing quite a bit of velocity with such a short barrel?

It doesn't.  The question still stands.

But it's only for my own edification, of course; O2BNMUD does not have to justify himself.

Why not buy an 18 inch Varmint upper in the first place?
