I need to see some of GemTech's work on any flash hiders.  I am considering sending my upper to them for permament installation of an A2 FH and having it gauged for a HALO suppressor so I want to hear nothing but good things.

If you have any pics of their work up close I'd love to see them.  As fas as I know, the only person here who has had GemTech work on his guns is USMC03 who (IIRC) had GemTech install all of his Bi-locks.

Thanks fellas.

I had Gemtech perm. install my Bi-Lock and Dr. Dater does an awesome job.  You will not be disappointed.  I will try to get pics up this evening.

The upper I just bought off a friend has the Gemtech bi-lock flash suppressor - it's perm. attached since it's a 14.5" barrel.  I'll have to check with him to see who did the work.

I guess I have an excuse to get a suppressor now, don't I? :D

Matt,

The reason I had Gem-Tech install my bi-loc's is because they warrentee their the work.  If someone else installs the bi-loc and the bi-loc was not installed properly and you start getting baffle strikes, you are out on your own, and I doubt your local gusmith is going to replace your suppressor.

To me the $25 install fee was worth having the peace of mind knowing it was done right, and if something were to go wrong, Gem-Tech would make it right.

I know several guys who have sent their uppers to Gem-Tech to have bi-locs installed.  I can't speak about the A2 flash hider and I don't know what Gem-Tech's policy is on installation of the A2 for the HALO.  Check with Gem-Tech and follow their advise.

Yeah I've already consulted with Philip Dater and Tom H. of GemTech.  The will do the A2 installation for a nominal fee.  I am pretty sure I am going to go ahead and have them install it for the same reason as you, peace of mind.

I just wanted to see some upclose pics of their work to see how it looks.

Can someone tell me, please, how they attach the hider?  Is it laser welded?

Has anyone here had them attach something like a vortex or phantom?

Thanks!

You can't use a Vortex or Phantom with the Gem-Tech suppressors.  They laser cut a solid piece of steel to act as the washer instead of using a crush or peel washer:

No reason to have them do a Vortex or Phantom.  They blind pin and laser weld the pin for perm install or use Rockset (sp?) ceramic adhesive for "non permanant" installs.  Good luck trying to get a flash hider off that was attached with Rockset.

Roger that guys.  I thought I had read they did a circumferential weld.  I was planning to put a vortex on a 14.5" barrel to bring it to legal length, and have it permanently attached.  Had no plans for a suppressor.

Guess there's no real advantage to sending it to Gemtech vs ADCO.

Thanks!

On mine, they drilled 2 small holes on the bottom of the flash hider and inserted 2 small pins and laser welded over them.  Outstanding job.

George,

ADCO is the way to go for your gunsmithing needs.  The only reason to send a upper to Gem-Tech is if you are buying one of their suppressors and need to have a flash hider installed.

If you are having a Gemtech flash hider pinned in place for 16" OAL - please send it to  Gemtech

I dont know what super steel they make them out of, but they are a PITA to drill and pin in place!

I have a A2 permed on my upper, and a HALO on the way, so we're going to be seeing how they work.  I used SS KAC shims to index the FH, so I should be ok.

What's the length of the GemTech Bilock f/s?

If permanently attached to a 14.5" barrel will it bring it up to the 16" length?*

Zak -

Did Gemtech permanently install that Bilock for you?  If so, can you get an upclose sot of their pin an weld?  I want to see what it looks like.  Thanks.

Thanks!  That was Plan Alpha anyway.  Thought the Gemtech option might be a little more highspeed but I see there's no real advantage.

USMC03 is right.  The only reason I am having Gemtech permanently install my A2 is because I am putting a HALO suppressor on it and if they install the A2 they will warranty the suppressor against baffle strikes.

FWIW, I had ADCO do the original pinning of the A2 with a peel washer and it came out great.  You can't go wrong with Steve doing your work.

Thanks Zak.

I am guessing from the pic that GemTech did not color over or smooth out the weld?

It is as you see it.

The scale is misleading.  The entire spot is only 0.100" wide, and I honestly couldn't even find it until I wiped the FH clean.

Gotcha.  I am having them pin my A2 in place and I hope it turns out similar to that.
