I see many members on here post pics of their rigs that have some sort of Silencer on them...

What is really your main purpose???

Stealth?

or to protect your own hearing???

Also, how many have them for legitimate job use, I.E. LEO or Military??? VS. some sort of collector..  Or is it possible to get them as a collector?

I'm just interested in them, as I seen'em posted alot, but never fired a silenced  weapon or heard one fired....

Any vids of them being fired???

Both of those are good reasons.  CDI is an important reason too, sometimes.

Are you saying that collecting isn't a legitimate use?   Or that "because I want one" sin't good enough?

Or is it possible to get them as a collector?
If your state allows them then they can easily be purchased after doing a good bit of paperwork and paying the tax then waiting for ATF to process and approve the purchase.

Protect own hearing = may be....
Stealth = yes..(with subammo)
Collector = no...(shoot the crap out of it, even FA )
Even video wouldn't truthly demonstrate the sound level.

The laws in your state may vary, but the federal law has no requirement to prove that it is needed for anything.  As with all controlled arms (such as machine guns and short barrelled shotguns) the federal forms require that you have a senior law enforcement official (i.e. cheif of police) sign off on the forms saying that you are not a criminal, allowed to have one in your city, etc. and many chiefs will want to know why you want it and may require a good reason for getting one.  But other chiefs are cool with it and will simply signoff.  ATF doesn't care so long as the chief puts his signature on the forms.

The best place to start is to go to the hometown forum for your state and ask if they are legal there and if there is somebody in your area who will sign off.

in europe it's considered unacceptable to shoot without your suppressor attached. they are very legal there, even in the most socialistic nations.

as far as legal ownership goes, i believe the term "i can therefore i will" comes to mind.

First off,   I would say that the US government,  through OSHA,  dictates that employers must make every effort to control the noise generated by equipment before putting their employees in PPE (ear plugs, muffs, etc...)   This is the law.

By this logic,  even though many of us are not shooters by occupation,  I still believe sound suppressors should be MANDATORY.

The AR-15 generates somewhere around 160 decibels.

Foam ear plugs,  even good ones with a NRR of 32,  only provide about 50% of the advertised rating, meaning that when worn properly,  a good plug will only reduce your noise exposure to about 144 dB,  still above the OSHA limit for impulse noise.    Double hearing protection only adds about 5-10 more dB of reduction.    Compare this to a good suppressor that pulls 30 or more dB right off the top.

Secondly,  and perhaps more importantly,

As citizens of The United States, we are not bound solely to the pursuit of life's necessities.

The benefit of freedom under this constitutional government is the opportunity to engage in the quest for personal fulfillment as a reward for leading a responsible lifestyle.

In abiding by the law, we are guaranteed the rights protected and established by that law.

It is not the place of anyone to question another's motives on the basis of "need."

"Need" is irrelevant where the exercise of rights is concerned.

According to the "State NFA Restrictions" section on the NFA FAQ info on this site, Missouri does not allow silencers. Move over to Oklahoma where you can have them.

"Because I want one" was good enough for my DA to sign off on my paperwork. I plan to use it while tree rat hunting too.

Videos don't do suppressors justice due to the circuitry that cuts down the sound level entering the camera's microphone.

Hell, you can't even have an AR in Ca. without it being registered (threatening it's ownership alltogether)...  I couldn't even think of a supressor...  whew...
