I bought my Colt from my father just recently. Its a full length 20 inch TM HBAR. It doesnt have a threaded barrel. But the previous owner, before my father, but a set screw FS on the end. The opening is twice the size of the barrel and it has various 'ports' in the sides and the top.

My question is should I remove this and just deal with being non-threaded? Does this unit affect my performance? It seems to do alright up to the 250-meter mark. And I do plan on buying a shorter upper at a later time.

Thanks for your time and sorry if this is a dumb question. I did a search, but found nothing.

If it were mine, I'd have the barrel threaded, and install a "real" FS, although the plain muzzle won't have any effect on the rifle's performance itself.

What would be an average estimated cost for a threading? Is it worth it really?

Now that, I couldn't say for sure, so I'd rather not say than tell you a lie. I do know though, that a LOT of people have sent their uppers to Kurt's Kustom Firearms, and been very happy with both his service and prices. He's a BUSY guy running a small business though, so the only thing that might be of concern is the turnaround time. There are others here that do this service with less turnaround time, but I forget exactly who they are. The Industry forum would be the best place to go looking around. Only speaking for myself, just the cosmetic issue alone would make it worth the cost; the set screws that held the last one on HAD to mar the barrel somewhat.

Well...that was certainly a lot of help, wasn't it?

ETA: KKF charges about $45 as near as I could find, doing a quick look-around of his website.

Sounds very resonable. Thanks.

Turn around time for Kurt can be lengthy, but he does good work, and cheap.  ADCO has a very short turn around, but they charge a little bit more.  Look them up in the industry section here.

Another +1 for Adco. Great service.

Not to hijack the thread, but what is the thread size on an AR? I'm thinking of threading my SAR3 to the same size as an AR so I can use AR brakes. Thanks.
