I was in a gun shop today and looked at a "new" upper in 5.56 from a company called POF. It was complete with bolt/carrier assembly and can readily attached to any AR lower. It has a gas system similar to a FAL and looked to be of very high quality and made in the USA. This particular unit had all the "bells and wisles" and the cost was $1000.
Is anyone familiar with this company and their products? I would definitely have bought it if I wasn't tapped out from paying taxes.

POF posts here as well, there's a tread about one not too long ago.  No experience with them, but you can check out Troy's website I believe they have descriptions etc.  Hope that helps...

A buddy of mine got one a while back for a "problem child" AR that has had a lot of reliability issues. With the POF upper, it's been working 100%, no problems whatsoever. Very nice unit. so far.

You can get a very high quality upper for $ 500, I don't see the point in paying twice as much for the novelty of having a piston instead of a gas tube. Gas tube operated ARs have been chugging along just fine for many decades.

Personally for $ 1000 I'd get a Beowulf  or 6.8mm and the appropriate reloading dies and brass.
or an acog
or a aimpoint and weapon light

apples and oranges man, your  comparing 2 totally different creatures.

if it were'nt for the flat tops my ar15's would have gone the way of the dinosaur. the rail systems created for the M16/AR15 are the only thing that has kept it alive.

i love my AR15's but i dispise the gas system for it's filthy habit.  nothing like a rifle that shits were it eats.

just beacause "Gas tube operated ARs have been chugging along just fine for many decades" doesn't mean they are that great. why else would the military be looking into a new system? don' t be affraid of change, embrace it when new designs come along, as long as they work.

Aimless doesn't like change. Gas pistons are here to stay....

Most countries use a bullpup of some kind so yes they are still around as well.

Waste of time IMHO.  I've put 5k w/o cleaning some (one I did 5k in one day when we first got the C7 ).

Don't like them, not one bit - bullpups or gas pistons

I got to shoot the LW gas piston and must say that I was impressed. I like bullpups so much that I own a BM M17! Hmmm maybe a bullpup with a gas piston system!

Most? I can think of 3 (well 4, Taiwan or Singapore uses some kind of Tavor like beastie maybe) I guess someone must have bought some of those FN pea shooters since they were used in that embassy raid in ?? South America somwhere. They certainly never gained mass acceptance like the AR/AK series.

BM M17, YUCK

I played with the SA80/L85 at the ranges for a week with Brits - enough to make me never want to touch a bulpup again.  I was not too impressed with the AUG either.

That said they are convient - I just wish they made one that worked well and had decent ergonomics.

Gas Pistons:  Yeah they maybe nice - but are they really necessary?  I'd personally like a LW upper one of these days and a HK M416, but I dont fall into the cult of the shits where it eats naysayers.

I, honest to God, have never seen an M17, except in a gunstore.

Respect has nothing to do with using you for kit

Seriously you like the M17?

I shot an early one and it felt like it was going to shot it self to death with the poor fit/metal on metal.

Thx for the info on the flag BTW.

Unless you get the M17 modified (by KKF) then it is pretty much a POS. Mine has had a lot of work done to it.

kevin, you seriously put 5k round thru an M16 with no maintanace at all? did you pull the b/bc to lube it?

did it have any extraction issues during the 5K run?

may favorite gas piston is the FNC. i just wish i could get one of the railed forends the swiss make for it.

no matter how many times i hear it, i always laugh when someone is surprised that that an AR can go for 5k+ rounds.

if an AR is built with decent parts, itll run like a champ.  i've put 9k thru my AR since the beginning of the year with no cleaning- not a hiccup.

I added some CLP that was it - just squirted into the ejection port opening.

I had some pics of a LMT bolt that I had put over 3k thru with NO maintenance or anything - it was dirty but not fouled extremely.  What ammo you use has a HUGE implication on your AR/M/C guns.

Grant - I see: a custom M17 -- unusual...
