Hi All,

I am in the market for a new upper. After searching around I want to go with a flat top (A4) 16" upper and I came across the RRA UTE2. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this setup? My main purpose it to have an EOTech mounted on the rifle. Is there any reason to choose the UTE2 over a flip-up rear site? Thanks.

Beats me. I guess you would have the ability to adjust the sites out to 800m, but who does that on a daily basis?

It should co-witness, but I think you'd be better off getting a regular flattop and then using an LMT rear site, or something similar, just to keep your options open.

Just my $.02

I agree with Wizzo.  I'd say a standard flattop is a better way to go.  If you want it rised some, RRA also sells a tact carry handle that may do the job.  I prefer the standard flattop.

In my opinon if you KNOW you are going to run just iron sights and / or a red dot optic like the EO Tech or Aimpoint, the I think the UTE 2 is the best of both worlds.  The UTE 2 has a couple advantages if the end user only plans on using iron sight or an electronic red dot optic:

1) The UTE2 provides you with a rock solid iron sight that is always there, will never work it's self loose, etc... (most tactical units, special ops units, etc, etc, are now running their BUIS in the up position or running stand alone style BUIS' like the LaRue or LMT model)

2) The UTE2 saves you $100+ (that you would normally spend on a BUIS)

3)  The UTE2 can be used as an iron sighted gun if you don't want to put an optic on it, but has the rail in front of the rear sight so you can run a electronic red dot optic on the gun.

The only down side to the UTE 2 is if you every want to mount a manginfied optic (like an ACOG), you can't do it with the UTE 2 upper receiver.

I recently purchased a UTE 2 Mid-Length for use as a SWAT gun / training gun.

Here is a post I wrote in reference to the UTE 2 on another board:

The A3 receiver is the most modular choice. Another choice is the RRA UTE 2 upper which has a fixed A2 sight in place and an A3 rail in front of it to mount an Aimpoint / EO Tech.

For a back up iron sight I think the LaRue is the best of the standard version, and the Troy Ind. are the best of the folding version.

I have owned a numerous ARMS BUIS' (#40, #40A, and #40L). The issue that I have with the ARMS products is that they are spring loaded, and the only thing holding the back up iron sight in the "up" position is a spring. I also don't like the screw attachment, there isn't much surface area and there have been problems with the screws coming loose.

The thing I like about the Troy Ind. BUIS is that when you deploy it (ie. put it in the up position) it is locked into position and you have to depress a button on the side to fold it back down. With the ARMS #40 BUIS it can be pushed down or moved when getting into odd positions (ie. close to the ground or a piece of cover). I also like the way in which the Troy BUIS attaches to the rail much better than the way the ARMS attaches. With the Troy the screw thread have more surface area (use loc-tite blue on the screw and let it cure overnight when attaching your BUIS to the receiver)

If you know that you won't be getting a magnified optic such as an ACOG....and plan on getting something like an Aimpoint or EO Tech, or don't know if you even want an optic....another choice you may want to look at is the Rock River Arms UTE 2 upper receiver. It has a fixed A2 sight with the carry handle removed and a A3 rail forward of the A2 sight.  Gunsite training center use to chop A2 upper receivers and add a Mark Brown rail back in the 90's to get this same set up.  If you are running an EO Tech or Aimpoint give the UTE 2 a hard look.

Good luck
