I really want to put together my first 'long distance' rifle. I have a carbine setup, I want something to really reach out and touch someone. Should I be looking more for a Remington 700 chambered in .308/7mm ? Or, buy a 20-24inch upper for my carbine? Am I thinking two different monsters here? I want to be able to shoot below Sub MOA, assuming I buy the high end optics, is the ar15 long barrel upper a proper choice? Or should I stick to a bolt rifle..? |
It is hard to beat the good old Bolt gun. It depends on really what U want. I have a 24 inch Bushmaster set up it shoots really well with BH75 gr loads. Do you care for the weight? Do you want one gun case and one lower with 2 uppers? So many options.One thing about my 24 inch set up it dont kick much at all.It is fun to shoot too.

Think outside the box for a minute here... just because it's an AR doesn't mean it has to be .223. Think about getting an upper chambered in the flat-shooting .204 Ruger. Les Baer makes a complete rifle, a 24" AR chambered in .204 Ruger. I don't know if they sell just the upper or not, but there must be a way to get one or build one yourself. The Les Baer rifles are sub-MOA rifles. According to a recent test in Shooting Times (Dec '04), the best group at 600 yards was 4.040 inches, which is 0.643 MOA. FITTER |
Fitter, good call bud, thanks for the reference. I looked it up, they actually do sell the upper's by themselves.. I didn't see any chambered for .204 but they gurantee .5moa on all their uppers.. Only thing is, their complete .223 varm goes for $1180  If money wasn't an object, but for $1180 I could get a Rem 700 with a great optical setup.. Any thoughts? |

The complete LBC Ultimate AR Super Varmint in .204 Ruger lists for $1989, according to that article! Yeah, ouch! The cool-factor of having one might almost make it worth it. Easy for me to say, though; it's not my money. Check this out... it's not cheap, either, but it might give you some direction. It's a .308 Remington M700 action in a McMillan A5 stock. All tactical-looking and everything, it's guaranteed to shoot .500 MOA. Maybe you could build something like this yourself for less money. I'd think about getting an upper using a heavier bullet. 6.5 Grendel is supposed to be incredible; it has great long range accuracy, as well as the ability to retain large amounts of energy at those extended ranges. It is quite pricey however. I only bring this up though, b/c I'm skeptical of the consistent accuracy as well as energy retention of such a light bullet as that used by the .204 Ruger. Maybe I'm missing something and just need to do more research on it. Right now though my gut is saying a bullet needs more mass at those types of ranges...there's a reason why shooters put 77-80gr bullets in the .223 and 190+ bullets in .300 WinMags at such long ranges. Like I said, I could be missing something  , I've been wrong PLENTY of times before.

I have shot the M24s before, and have been decent for a newby at scope shooting. Really looking forward to shooting this.. |
