I am new (check out that post count hy.gif ) and was hoping someone could give me a little info on removing an ace skeleton stock that came on my Bushmaster...I am planning on replacing it with a Magpul but am stumped! hanks M.Cruz Edited: I did a search because I am sure it has been asked before...but could not find any results. |

Really easy... actually easier to do than to explain... From the rear of the stock, remove the Ace buttstock's top allen bolt (same as removing a standard A2 buttstock), then slide the stock backwards. It works well to "roll" the foam tube back over itself as you're pulling the stock backwards. Remember to take care not to lose the rear takedown spring and detent as they will come out when you take the buttstock off. Scot |
| Take out the upper, single larger screw out of the back of buttstock, remove any recessed setscrews that may installed in the sides of the rear buttplate, then just pull the thing off the buffer tube. You will need to "walk" the foam cover back as you remove the Ace stock. If you have trouble getting the foam sleeve to move, then just cut it lengthwise and peel it off first. Obviously you will need to get a new one from Ace for the reinstallation. |

Hmm...brand new rifle and when I removed upper/larger allen nut from ace stock it had some rust?!?! Still cannot get the darn thing off! Removed every nut from stock and still no luck. phooey. The stock area nearest the receiver seems loose and moves...but on the back top portion of the stock...where the large Allen nut was, has no give or movement at all. Is it possilbe that Bushmaster used an adhesive when attaching the stock? |
Check for allen-head set screws on each side at the rear. |
I have seen buffer tubes that were an extremely tight fit to the point that a mallet had to be used to get the stock to seat properly. Looks like you will have to use the reverse process using a vise and mag block to hold the lower in place and use a piece of wood braced against the inside of the stock and hit the piece of wood with a mallet until it comes free. |

The only allen bolt you need to remove is the top one (when viewed from the back)... same as an A2 buttstock. All the other cap screws just fill up the holes for various sling mounting locations. Of course, an extra long cap screw might bind. You do not even need to remove the rubber buttplate (lower back hex bolt). Raptor is right... sometimes they fit tight and you need to "persuade" them on with a mallet so they would come off hard. If you're really worried about it... call / e-mail Bushmaster and ask! Scot |

| My ACE stock does in fact utilize two small setscrews that enter from the sides at the rear of the stock assembly. they contact the OD of the buffer tube at the extreme rear of the tube. If you see any internally wrenching (Allen) setscrews in these two hole then you will need to remove them or you will never get the stock to slide off of the buffer tube without serious damage to something. Good luck. |

Ace must make a few variations of their ARFX stock... or perhaps other companies modify them. I have two and NEITHER has any set screws that tighten into the extension tube. What would be the point of that? The first one I bought two years ago has a left and right blind hole for a single point sling stud and a third threaded hole in the bottom lower back. The one I bought about a month ago has those three plus a fourth in the top back... this hole is threaded all the way down and you can see the back edge of the extension tube. You COULD run a set screw down there, one is NOT supplied with the stock kit, and I don't see WHY you would want to... these stocks are rock frickin' solid without any sort of set screws. I wonder if there are AR10 ones that might need extra screws? Scot |
