I have an old Air Force M16 upper and have one question. On top of the front sight base where the sight post is, there is the word UP and an arrow. I know what this means but my question is, is the word UP stamped or is it raised like a casting? This one has the UP raised, like braille. I have always seen the UP stamped on all the M16a2's I've dealt with, was it different on the old ones? Anyone?

I'd venture to guess that the old base is cast. The forged ones are stamped, not raised.

It does appear to be cast. Did the military use a cast  FSB on the early models or would this be a commercial replacement? Thanks.

I will attempt to take a picture and post it. Thanks for the help.

I have NEVER seen a cast base on a GI barrel; and I've seen them all the way back to the original 14" twist experimental pieces.  Somebody must have replaced that base at some point.

What are the markings on the barrel itself?

The only barrel markings are a 12 towards the muzzle end and a proofmark (triangle with a letter inside, the same as by the ejection port) on the barrel in between the FSB posts. The finish on the FSB matches the barrel perfectly, it does not look like it has been refinished recently, if ever. I am still trying to get a picture up, but I'm having problems getting a digital camera that works decent.
