First off, this report is way overdue, but might be of interest to anyone dealying with Olympic Arms or Dtech. I bought an Oly upper quite a while back and could NOT get it to shoot. I eventually returned it to Oly for a replacement after burning up 6 or 800 rounds of ammo trying to find a load it liked. I purposely ordered a 16" SUM with a 1:12 twist for light bullets. I was getting patterns, not groups. The BEST I could get was 1" groups with match ammo. Not acceptable. Anyway, I got the upper back with a replacement barrel. 6 or 800 rounds later it still woulnd't shoot. I was just about to return it for a refund when I stumbled across DTech in another forum. Being an Oly warranty smith, he asked that I send it to him with all the info I could. I sent a LONG letter and all the specs of the ammo I had tried, cleaning routine, weather, etc... just anything I could think of. After much trial and error he found that not only was the replacement barrel not a good one, the bolt on the upper was also out of spec - just a few hundredths, but enough to matter. Long story short, he figured out what the Oly factory guys couldn't, fixed it, returned it with a target (1/2" with 52 gr match ammo) at no charge. Well after a very long delay because of work issues, I finally got to the range. I shot about 10 different BH loads - everything from 40gr Vmax to 75gr Match. I have to tell you, the heavier loads were weird... waaaaay big! Anyway, I found not one, but three sub MOA loads, just from the BH stuff I had on hand. I am now very happy with this upper and am extremely happy with DTech's service and just wanted to post something here to give him props in case anyone was wondering about working with him. I have no doubt that he will be making me an upper in one of the WSSM's in the future. |

He has always been a wealth of info everytime I've talked/written/ posted with him. I'm glad to see you got squared away, I wasn't aware of the bolt issue. Thanks for passing along the info! What was suppoed to have been wrong with the barrel, or was it more of the bolt ? |
|
I actually should have clarified that a little. Both of the first two barrels were just mediocre. Within their spec, but they just wouldn't shoot. Mike took the one I sent him and mounted it on another upper he uses and it just wouldn't shoot well. The bolt issue I actually misspoke - it was actually the receiver. The bolt & receiver were not square to the barrel. It apparently wasn't off by much, but obviously it didn't have to be much! |

Markbo, thank you for the support! Just to clarify, it was the receiver that was not square or true, but it was the first receiver that I could not correct by squaring it in the lathe. After replacing the receiver it shot great. The other odd thing about working with that upper was that it shot 5 consecutive 5 shot groups at 100 yards that were just sub-MOA. It wasn't until I tried other match ammo that I found that it shot poorly. Even with the limited experience that I have had with receivers that are not square, that symptom has been common in the ones that I have worked with. It will shoot say 52 grain Match HP but 55 grain match is all over the paper. |

I know for sure I'm getting a Wssm Upper built by DTECH1 pretty soon...I just can't decide what cal. I want a .25 but then I also want a 7, then again 308....can't decide yet until All the specs are laid out on the table I check Dtech's website almost everyday for updates |
