I've got an AR15 16" upper of unknown manufacture that I believe to be post-ban due to the odd flash hider arrangement on the tip of the barrel. It's non-threaded, only pressure-tapped into place. I recently discovered this by taking a #19 Metric crescent wrench to the faux flash hider's wrench flats, which spun freely (under lots of friction) once broken loose. It was attached via ribbings around the barrel, which looked to be turned down in that spot and as I said, friction fit via tapping with a rubber mallet. I'm just curious, is this normal for post-ban rifles? If so, where would I find replacement, WORKING flash-hiders or muzzle brakes for such a barrel? The birdcage faux flash hider looks to be legit and capable of it's job, but occupied the entirity of the area that had been turned down to fit it, giving it the 14.5" look w/ the faux flash hider attached, bringing it to 16" in total. If anyone's wondering why I did it, well, I saw rifling all the way to the end of the barrel and an obvious seperation between the inner barrel and the birdcage fake, keying me off to that it -may- be removeable, which it was. So, in short, anyone know where to get working gear for this thing? |

Sounds like the RRA m4gery barrel. Fake FS pressed onto a 16" barrel. O.D. of FS is larger than the standard 22mm, but I don't remember the exact size offhand For a working replacement, you would have to turn down and thread the end of the barrel, then buy a FS to screw on. They are available at just about any AR supplier right now. ETA Metric crescent wrench????? |

Ah, I see. Well, nice to know a possible manuf. for my upper. I'm tempted to just skip that part and get a 4-Setscrew attaching muzzle brake instead, rather then getting the barrel turned down and threaded. That's a little pricey for me at the moment. Edit: What's "ETA Metric Crescent Wrench" mean? I'm missing some terminology, I think. :) |
Funny thing about that is that some "adjustable" wrenches are marked in mm on one side and inches on the other.

I've always called them open-end wrenches, but split-end may be what they say in your area... If you want a flash suppressor, you might want to wait until that is what you can afford. Good muzzle brakes do reduce felt recoil/rise, but they increase noise - a LOT. |
