starting with a 16" HBAR how much weight do you save if barrel below handguard area is reduced to .700+- ? ditto, if barrel in front of front sight is reduced to .625 ? if you know of other contour/weight reductions, it would be very helpful

All I can add is this...

I purchased a RRA chrome lined, mid-length 16" barrel from Pete in NH.  It was HEAVY!  I had it turned to approximately SPR contour AND fluted by Kurt at Kurt's Kustom.  To my disappointment, it wasn't much lighter.

I then purchased a second, identical barrel from Steve at ADCO, and elected the "profiled" barrel option which takes the handguard area down to .625 or so.. (whatever A2 profile is).

The weight difference between the two barrels is quite noticeable.

thanks for your responses
Onslaught..i'm new to contouring what is the dimension for SPR contour? is it only below the handguard? was the fluting only in front of the front sight?

The SPR uses a mid-weight profile under the handguards, I think it's .75" or .80".  Thinner than an HBAR but heavier than the govt profile.

Maybe mine's not true SPR profile, because it's about .850 under the handguards.  The fluting is UNDER the handguards only.  (behind the front sight).

It's a really nice barrel, I just wish I'd spent all that money on a stainless barrel for an "SVR" (Short Varmint Rifle) Dissipator I'd like to put together.

That sounds about right for an SPR.
