I bought a 16" barrel that has been turned down to light-weight profile from the FSB foward... the only markings I can find on it now is a date 1/98 just to the rear of the hand guard cap,(bottom of barrel) and what looks like a 0(zero) just in front of the barrel ext.

Anyone got these markings on their barrels??

Thanks!!

The date and the "0" makes me think that it is a Colt barrel.  I have a couple with dates and "0"s on them.  The fact that it was turned down forward of the FSB, where the standard Colt barrel stamping would have been, is another reason.

The front sight base seat is .75" OD?

No, it's .625.....

A .625 seat should be a LW profile forward of the FSB. I'm not aware of a contour with a .625" seat and a .725" forward section. It's late I may be missing something. What I'm getting at is the front of the barrel probably wasn't turned down unless the recontouring also included the sight base seat. That's difficult given the pin locations and need to remount the FSB. In that case the gas port now may even be oversized.

ETA, agree with Mongo on maybe Colt due to "O" and date stamp, both Colt kind of stuff.

ETA2, Forged front sight base? Stamped "UP"? Rivet retaining front sling swivel?

Well, that sounds reasonable. My barrel is stepped down to .565 forward of the FSB(Cast, no marks and a pinned sling swivel), and the lathe worg looks "rougher" than whats under the handguards... Thanks for all the info!!!

If it's a cast FSB it's not a Colt. There is no "UP" on the FSB behind the front sight post? Pinned sling swivel like a roll pin?

There is a section in the Troubleshooting FAQ that shows how to tell cast FSBs from forged ones.
