The handguard (stock CAR handguards) move around CW and CCW, maybe 1cm in each direction. How can I fix this? the ring moves also. How can I stop them moving? anything need tightening? -Chris |
Is the barrel nut tight. I could see how this might happen if it was extremely loose. |

Take off the handguards. On the receiver end, there will be a piece that goes around the barrel. It looks like a wheel with a lot of rounded spokes. It shouldn't move when you try and turn it with your fingers. The gas tube will kind of hold it in place but if it's too loose then it will still move. If you can move it with your fingers, as I suspect you might be able to, it is definately too loose. You might want to take the gas tube out to know for sure. To take the gas tube out, use a small punch to drive out the pin that is in the front sight base above the barrel. Once you drive it out, you should be able to pull the gas tube out through the receiver. In order to tighten the barrel nut, you will need an armorer's tool (a strap wrench might work, but I haven't tried it). I forget how tight it should be but it is measured with a torque wrench so if it is only finger tight, it is not tight enough. Tighten it and put everything back on. |

Is this a new rifle? And what brand is it? Because some move more than others. And have you measured the movement or is 1 cm a guess? To measure the movement, put tape on the receiver and on the handgaurd. Move the handguard as far as you can in one direction. Then draw a line even on both pieces of tape. then move the handguard as far as you can the other direction and mark the tape on the receiver wear the handguard line is. Then measure that difference. |
| In all of the uppers I have bought or built, I have never had handguards with that much play. I would venture to say that I have never had handguards with any play. No AR in spec should have that much play. I'm sure something just needs tightened to fix the problem. |

All of the Armalites I have seen have "some" play. Can you go back to a dealer and check some other models? Also, call or email Armalite. The are a major sponser of this site. Just click the golden lion on the top of every page! If there is a problem , I am sure they will fix it. Armalite is one of the top builders out there. Let us know what you find. |

One of my rifles had alot of play and the other one doesn't. Funny because everything is tight. It pissed me off so much that I got a RASII for that rifle and I like it so much that I am looking for someother railed handguard for the other rifle. Not so much because of the handguard but because it feels funny shooting without a verticle grip. I know of a short term fix. Cut a piece of intertube and stretch it around the barrell nut, then mount the handguards. Worked for my buddy. Mine however was loose at the top not around the bbl nut. |
