So, I'm looking at starting a new project, and I'm at the barrel choice phase.  The biggest question is WHO should I buy from?  Currently looking over at www.model1sales.com  They certainly have a large variety at cut-rate prices.  Anyone have any experience with their craftmanship?  (Or know who they get their barrels from?)

I know I want a standard 16" heavy moly barrel (and I'll probably throw in fluting for show ht

Model 1 refuses to tell people where their parts come from other then saying they are a current maker/supplier for our armed forces. I was told by someone that their parts are from China dont really know. The parts I have seen looked real good.

The fact they will not tell you leads me to believe they are from China.

Hey, my first post.  They are from China, I read it on a forum somewhere when I was looking for my first lower.  Then again, you can't believe everything you read.

I have built a few on Model 1 sales kits.  Overall they aren't bad.  I have had to do some fitting on some parts.  The first A2 receiver I got from them was almost purple, functional but purple.  The second A2 receiver I got from them was jet black.  It even had a splintered A forging mark.  Their flattops look like any other from the major companies.  When I bought from them they said they where using Wilson barrels.

I built one and only one using Sun Valley Traders, AKA American Spirit Arms.  Talk about a POS kit.  everything had to be fitted and the springs and pins where crap.

I have been building using Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, and DPMS parts lately.  They are worth the extra $$.  I have really been impressed with the RRA parts and will be using them for future builds.

Lowers I have built on Bushmaster, Eagle/Armalite, DPMS, Olympic (New and old Stopsign SGW), and I rebuilt a Colt for a buddy.  From now on I will be sticking with Bushmaster and the Eagle receivers.  I may try RRA if their lowers are as nice as their other parts.

I have decided you get what you pay for when you build an AR.  Put good parts in and you get a good rifle.  Put crap in and get crap out.  I often wonder how many of these modern AR horror stories are from crap parts.

IDHunt,

Let me just say that you have the best Sig line I have ever seen.

Oh yeah, and thanks for the heads-up on Model 1 and ASA parts kits!

Thanks for all the response!

According to Model 1's site there Barrels are "US Made!", so the whole China topic is kinda odd.   I was just trying to figure out if they were selling marked down barrels from one of the big 3.

Anyways, I've got a few questions into BM on what they can get me and when (but I'm keeping M1 in mind just in case).

MWP,

Please - if you're going to spend the bucks for fluting then you'd be better off to spend that money and get a good chrome-lined barrel from Bushmaster.

I am not a fan of chrome-moly barrels for an AR. That's my opinion.  I really suggest you get a chrome lined barrel.  You will never be disappointed.

I thought model 1 used Shaw barrels...oh well.

As for their stuff, it's passable...I've got a couple of Model 1 kit guns, and the only problem I've had is with the lower parts kit...some of the springs needed to be trimmed, but that's no biggie.  Oh yeah, I had a bad gas block, but they fixed it pronto and it shoots fine now.

I picked up a bull barrel from Model 1 sales at a gun show a few years back.  It shoots 3/4 in groups consistently with sierra 80 grain bullets.  Very happy with it.
