Guys, I bought a bushmaster M4A3. I love it. Anyhow, I had it modified. One of the modification requires the removal of the muzzle brake (mini-y). Anyhow, after the modification, every time I noticed that my bullets are keyholing 25 meters and beyond. Is my barrel pretty much dead or is the solution as simple as replacing a new muzzle brake? please help if you can |

I woudn't reccomend that. It sounds like if you re-mounted the muzzle break, for some reason the bullets may be impacting the muzzle break, causeing de-stabilization leading to keyholing. If this is not the cause and you are experienceing this with no muzzle break, you might want to make sure the twist rate of your barrel supports the round you are firing. If it does, and you don't have the muzzle break attached, it could be the crown, in which case re-crowning will be the only alternative. If you are using re-loads try factory ammo of an appropriate weight for your barrels twist rate. "Sounds like someone put a lot of stress on the muzzle when the brake was removed." It would be hard to do that, as the actions you take to remove a muzzle break have nothing to do with a muzzle crown. If you actually put enough stress on the barrel to somehow warp or bend it and cause this to happen, it is probably either ruined or will need to be shortened and re-crowned to fix the problem, but like I said HIGHLY UNLIKELY. |

Charlie587, A lot of M1A shooters that I know experienced keyholing and/or weird phenomena when they didn't properly reinstall their USGI flash hiders. The culprit was bullet-to-flash hider impact, just as Green0 mentioned. Copper "streaking" in the flash hider or muzzle brake is evidence of a misaligned device. If not, then like other members have said, it could be your muzzle crown. Also, are you using the same batch of ammunition before and after your modifications? Jim |
