AHHHHHHH.... why did you paint this one too?!?!

[jedi] now, as we have discussed, i need you to get on that LMT MRP, you seem to be slacking [/jedi]

MRP is a definite possibilty.....at some point.

Dude - I can't see it - its camo'd too good.

Looks nice.

I'm moving forward with my SPR project, and thought about camo'ing it. I'm too chicken to paint a $1,000 + gun.

Its REALLY easy. You just point and spray.

Nice!!! Question:  How does the Krylon hold up to cleaning solvents?  Thinking of a paint job for myself.

This is my Dissipator that I did 6-7 months ago. CLP doesnt do a thing to the finish.

Very nice cammo job there Hawkeye!

looks good, eventho i would nver do it to my rifle.

One question: How much does something like this decreases the value of the rifle?? I know you probably won't sell the rifle anytime soon, but I'm wodering how is it inpacted by the paint job. Is the paint easily removable??

Dude, AR's that look used are cool. No one should paint a safe queen.

That is a very subjective question. These carbines might be MORE valuable to some.

I've never considered the value aspect, as I dont personally look at them as investments. The Krylon is not easily removed (compared to some other things), thus one of my reasons for using it.

Value is relative.

It looks like a masterpiece to me Hawkeye. Thanks for sharing.

Painting stuff is addictive.  I started off painting my TBA M40A1 sniper rifle, and am now thinking about buying stock in Krylon.  It's nice to be able to adjust your camo for the season/area in just a few minutes.  I keep a couple of cans of paint in my go-kit in case I need to adjust for a particular call-out.

Don't knock it 'till you've tried it, but that first blast of paint on a $2,000 gun/scope will stop your heart.  Gotta get over the hump and you are good to go.  :D

Here is my wifes that I did a while back, just for comparison.

I too have used Krylon. I have actually used the camo krylon for alittle over a year.  Wears well, looks good, and take a beating.  Its also very resistant to CLP and other gun solvents as well.  I don't know the meaning of the word "safe queen", so all my guns were used, sometimes very hard as well.  Unfortunatly I don't own them anymore as I had to sell off every gun I had to pay for an attorney in a child custody case(when it comes down to the decision between my kids or my guns, its a no brainer and the guns went)

But, alas, I still have pics of what they were like.  I miss them....sniff..sniff....

FWIW, I have no problem taking the paint to the rifle. It comes off easy enough with the proper chemicals and dosn't devalue the rifle in the least.  It actually protects the rifle from many of the smaller dings and scratches it would otherwise get, as well as protects the anodizing from regular handling wear.

Like Hawkeye, I started with a base coat of tan, and then with progressivly darker colors.  And the OD greem mags were brand new in wrap  Okay mags that I opened, degreased, and  applied OD brownelles OD teflon-moly coat to, then baked.  Great way to protect good mags, and it makes them look good too.

Before.....

Dang John, another awesome job. I think this is the best one yet. As soon as I get the Surefire I want for the SPRbine, I think I want to get some of that mesh stuff and try to get that new pattern over it with some brown. Is that what you did yesterday?! We all missed you.

I know how all of you feel, I had to have john do my rifle, I couldnt quite do it myself. I was nervously pacing around his house telling myself it would be ok. I didnt care as much about the rifle as I did the ACOG. But I tell you, in the end, it was a great decision and the rifle came out great. Do it! Or at least have Hawkeye do it for you!!!

Did this Saturday. Had to go to my wife's nephews B-day party yesterday.

Well I just wanted to show you all this, this is krylon that was put through an airgun.  Total parts including the airgun was just under $50.  Im doing a write up on how to do it.  Im waiting for one of the local guys to bring over their gun and Ill take pics and teach people how to do it.

As a way to say thank you for all that this board has given me!

Good job by the way on the guns posted above.
And yes it is so hard to start to paint an AR for the first time.  I had to hold my breath and bite my lip!  Scared the piss out of me.  But the end justifies the means!

I have painted a few with krylon, my mini 14 came out great in a desert pattern and my folding stock version of my 10-22 is in Rhodesian cammo.  I want to do my AR, but a couple of questions.  did you use just the spray paint can in cammo krylon, did you "mask" your stripes or just go freehand?  I masked mine last time and the edges looked too sharp, but the overspray from a normal can might mist too much.  The EBR is broken down, stripped, de-greased, and ready to paint, just waiting for your input.  I wont paint the pachmeyer vindicator grip as it is rubber and it may not take, but the rest is going to be done.  help us out a little before i take the plunge and give us a step by step.  i know a lot of us want to do it, we are just scaredy cats!  Tous Jour Pret

Ok how I did it was the spray cans.  But I took the spray cans and emptyd the paint into a dry water bottle to transfer it into an airbrush bottle.  I am going to do a write up on how all this is done.  There is a airbrush kit you can buy in the toy isle of Walmart.  Its used for models and its made by Testors.  I think the basic kit was around $30.  You do not need to buy the one with paint because you will not use that with the gun.  The materials that I used were the 3 colors from Krylon.  Tan, Brown, and Green.  I also got a can of Matte finish polyurthene.  Also get some fine steel wool.  This will knock off the over spray and will get the paint to look as one.  So you are looking at a total of about $50 in product.  Its all done free hand and it takes some time.  Start with the Tan then Green and finish with the brown.  After each color lightly rub with the steel wool.  To knock off the over spray.  Note that if you rub to hard paint will come off.  With the tan you can spray out from the can itself.  And do many coats (at least 3)  that will build a base.  Play around with the air gun to get the amount of spray that you want.  It is adjustible.  And just freehand in big patterns.  Brasspile has a thing on Cammo and the bigger paterns work better than tight ones.  After you apply all coats of paint allow to dry.  About 1 hour in the sun.  The paint will be dry to touch about 15 mins or so after applying.  But it is not cured and when rubbing with the wool if you apply to much pressure it will come off.  Then apply the matte finish from the can.  You can go heavy on this.  But do it in several coats.  When dry to touch follow up with the wool to knock any glare off of the finish.  Make sure that you apply enough to be able to take some off with the steel wool.  (Note) if you are doing a stripped lower make sure you go back and clean out the holes for the pins and such.  Use fine sand paper and go lightly.  Just to clean out the layers of paint.  This will allow you to put the pins in with out beating with a hammer.  Allow a week to cure and your done.  You can assemble the next day just do not use for a week.  And that will not come up with heat nor have problems with CMP.

I will do a write up when I get one in that will show step by step on how to do.  Other paints can be used like Duracoat and the same process can be done.  MAke sure that you wipe down the gun every time you use the steel wool.  You do not want to get that stuff in the paint.  Its really not that hard.  But it does hurt to do it for the first time.  I charge about $150 to $200 depending on paints used and what is wanted.  I also use a high end paint gun but the one at wallyworld works for something like this.  IF you use krylon remember its just paint.  You can always strip it if need be.  Duracoat is something else.  Take  your time and do not rush!!!   And prep and have in mind what is wanted befor going into a project.  Make sure that you have everything with you and you can get to it.  Have fun and watch for the write up!

Thanks

Sorry for anything mis-spelled did not check and I suck at it!

My method is not nearly as professional. I just wipe the outside of the rifle down with a clean rag, spray the entire rifle with the base color. Hit it with a hair dryer for a minute, add the stripes. Hit with hair dryer again for a minute. Takes about 20-30 minutes in the garage from start to finish.

Hawkeye how does that paint hold up on a grip like that?
4/27/2004 7:41:13 AM EDT
[#32]
I had a pic around somewhere of the grip on my dissi, that showed it pretty good, but I cant seem to find it.
Its holding up MUCH better than I had expected. It is worn, and has come off a little, but it is still there for the most part. Mind you, this is with it getting handled DAILY, and shot at LEAST once a month, if not more, for the last 6-7 months or more. So, that said, I think its holding up great. The areas it has worn/came off on the grip, just add character to me.
Certain other un-named persons arent completely thrilled with the way its wearing on the grip of their rifle however.
4/27/2004 7:48:06 AM EDT
[#33]
did you do it the same way as stated above?
4/27/2004 7:54:11 AM EDT

Yup. The ones posted on the first page of this thread, my carbine, my dissi, and my wifes Carbon 15, all done the same way.

Free hand.

And I didn't paint mine to be works of art, so none of the fancy dancy stuff such a air brushes or worrying about over spray.

Just paint the damn thing then go out and use it until it all wears off, then paint it again.

Thats what rifles are for.

Chris

p.s. as far as technique, I simply degreased with gunscrubber on the whole rifle, dried with a hair dryer, painted, let each layer set for about  30 minutes in a hot summer garage, and then let the whole thing cure in same said hot, closed up garage for about 2 days to ensure that the paint was completely set and dried before I used it.  I found that letting the paint cure is a good thing because it seems to wear much better if it dosn't start absorbing body oils from your hands until its completely dry, and dosn't wear off as fast.  I have also found that the same thing applies to teflon moly coating. I allow all teflon/moly sprayed items to cure for at least 24 hours before I bake them and they seem to wear much better that way.

True but why paint over and over again.  DO it right and well the first time.  Take pride in your work.  I understand what you are saying but still.  IF you are going to spend the money do it right the first time.

I do not knock others and people have their own views.  But I want mine to work and I want it to look good.  But Im the one that washes my car 3 to 4 times a week also.

Just me I guess!

Very nice!  Good light base, large, high-contrast shapes, etc.

Try to get some pictures of it out in the environment, from at least 30 yards away.  I bet you'll have trouble picking it out of the background.

OK did it tonite.  shot it Sunday, cleaned thouroughly monday, removed bolt/carrier/charging handle, degreased after cleaning with brake cleaner, let dry til tonite.  hung it up by the folding stock sling thing and the front site with some picture hanger wire in my shop from the roof so that it was below eye level and put 3 coats of camo krylon tan on the whole thing.  taped off the end of barrel and the covers for the aimpoint of course.  almost pissed my pants the first spray.  now should i let the base coat cure for a couple of days, here in yuma it was 101 degrees today and the weapon is in my tin shop with 2 500 watt lamps on it, then do the brown, wait, then the grey, then the matte poly?  i want the desert camo pattern.  when i did my mini it did turn out great in urban cammo but i tried to do it all at once and it took a really long time to cure.  opinions would be great.  thanx

you can apply several coats of tan base and be able to apply the other colors anywhere from 15 to 30 mins at that heat.  Now cureing and dry to touch are 2 different things.  Once dry to touch you can add your other colors.  I will brush mine with the steel wool but that is just me.  I do like mine to feel like metel vs brail.  (not that bad) But again be carefull and make sure you clean off all loose fibers from the wool.  Allow paint to dry at least several hours and make sure you do not touch it with fingers.  Oil in fingers mixed with paint is not alway the best.  Then hit several coats of clear.  This can be applied somewhat heavy but do not let it run.  Make sure you get a good several coats on.  This will help the paint to stay and will keep all cleaners from messing with the paint.  I then go over it will another wipe of steel wool.  This will take down any glare that you might get from the clear.  You can do this when its dry to touch again.  Then allow it to sit for several days in the heat.  This will allow the paint to cure and harden to final stage.  Here its only in the 70s so I have given it more time than in the hot summer.

Good luck and please post pics when done.  remember its only paint and can be striped if you do not like.  But cammo is not that hard to paint!

I would consider painting my furniture but never my whole gun< I am not as gifted as you guys< good work!

Thats a Hogue rubber grip with the paint wearing off right? I wonder how well a standard grip or a first Samco stow grip would handle it

ok, did the base coat like i said, tonite did the light green camo and the brown.  TURNED OUT GREAT!!!  I then took the can of flat black, sprayed it into an extra cap and did the BDU choclate chip routine with a brush.  FANTASTIC!!  it got too dark to take pictures of the finished side, i have to do the other side tomorrow and then the matte finish but if i knew how to post a pic i took some with my POS dig camera.  help?

its 140am here.  I just stay up and read till I pass out or watch the 30 min news all the time.  I was hoping to hear back from someone on this forum about doing a paint job for him.  But I guess that will be tomorrow.  I just have to return to work tomorrow and love starting my week on Friday.

Again your rifle looks really good and I cant wait to see the finished product.  Did you do all of that from a can except the black or did you have an airbrush?
